If you're interested in time travel, stay in the old building of Wellnesshotel Zum Koch. It felt like stepping back at least 70 years. The décor was painfully outdated, the facilities were worn, and the entire building resembled a low-budget hotel from decades ago, with a few cheap cosmetic attempts to modernize it rather than a genuine wellness retreat.

Our room had no air conditioning—only an old, noisy fan that produced far more noise than cooling. Instead of a proper refrigerator, the room had a small insulated cooling box—an outdated solution that didn't cool anything despite making constant noise. To keep it cold, we even had to ask the reception for ice, just like in the old days.

During our stay, the weather was extremely hot. Without air conditioning, we had no choice but to leave the windows open. Unfortunately, the hotel is surrounded by farmland, making this impossible to enjoy. At times, the smell of fertilizer was overwhelming, and countless flies entered the room. I barely slept during our two-night stay because of the heat, the flies, and the constant noise. The outside temperature reached 37°C. To make matters worse, our room was located directly above the restaurant, where loud conversations, laughter, and cigarette smoke from guests continued late into the night. We had booked this hotel to relax and unwind, but instead we experienced constant discomfort.

The mattress and pillows perfectly matched the overall condition of the hotel—old and extremely uncomfortable. The shower cabin in the room was so unbelievably small that it was impossible even to bend down and wash your feet comfortably.

The wellness area was equally disappointing. The swimming pool was visibly dirty and full of dead flies. The saunas themselves were in good condition, probably because hardly anyone used them in such hot weather. The shower heads in the spa were heavily clogged, causing the water to spray in every direction except where it should.

In Standartzimmer bei Temperaturen 33-36'C , keine Klima, keine Lüftung , nicht einmal Kühlschrank für Getränke . Laut Angaben von der Rezeption soll es ein Ventilatot im Zimmer befinden . In meinem Zimmer (240) leider nicht und wurde ich post factum kurz vor der Abreise informiert. Irgendein Kabel über Balkongeländer umgewickelt, aufgeheizt Etrrnitdach vor Balkon daher 2 Nächte unmöglich zu schlafen gewesen.. Für 4 Sterne leider nicht nachvollziehbar.

Auf meiner Motorrad Tour in die Türkei bin ich am 28.04.2026, Dank Booking.com, auf das Wellnesshotel "Zum Koch" in Ortenburg aufmerksam geworden. Ich war dermaßen begeistert, dass klar war, dass ich auf dem Rückweg am 29. Mai wieder hier absteigen werde.
Dieses Wellnesshotel bietet allen Luxus, Komfort und Service, den es braucht. Vom umfangreichen Frühstücksbuffet mit Sekt, allen Variationen an Kaffee oder Tee, Backwaren, Müsli, Marmeladen, Obst, Gemüse, Fleisch, Käse und Eierspeisen vom Koch zubereitet und an den Tisch gebracht über, wer möchte, Mittagessen im Restaurant, Nachmittags-Snack hin zum Dinner in feinster Atmosphäre mit Sternequalität.
Der Wellnessbereich mit riesigem Garten, mehreren Saunen, Dampfbad, komfortablen Ruhebereich und Hallenbad. Kostenlosen Bademantel, Saunatuch, kuschelige Decke, nicht zu vergessen als Erfrischung kostenlos Wasser, Fruchtsäfte oder Tee.
Der Service: wie der Herr, so's Geschär 😂. Unmögliches erledigt man sofort, für Wunder kann der Gast einen Tag verlängern.
Die Lage: in schönster Natur im Einzugsbereich von Passau mit Donau, Inn und Ilz im Dreiländereck Tschechien, Österreich, Deutschland mit Bayerischen Wald.

Personalul amabil, jos la receptie si la restaurant a fost totul impecabil, liniste si parcare mare

Cons:

Camera parca era din 1960, tot asa si mirosea (miros puternic de mocheta si mobilier vechi), cam opusul la ceea ce e jos la restaurant, dar baia a fost curata si lenjeria de pat curata. Pe perne nu ai cum sa dormi ca erau sub orice critica. Am dormit fara dar destul de bine.

Die Lage, die Terrasse, die Freundlichkeit des Personals, die Einzelzimmer Preis-Leistung, ich fühle mich als Wiederholerin wohl im Hotel.

Cons:

Das bisher immer exklusive Frühstück hat sehr nachgelassen, die Besonderheiten wie frisch zubereitetes Omelette / Eierspeisen, frischer O-Saft, Salate, wurden eingespart.
Bei 4 Nächten wurde nur 1x das Zimmer gesäubert.

Pros:

The room was of a good size for a single room. The restaurant was serving nice food. From experience traveling with a dog most of the time you will have limited options to walk. But here I had several nice walks. Top.

Cons:

The room had no air conditioner and as it was very warm outside the room was also warmer than I like. But it was not really a problem for me.
