The Crowne Plaza Roma was a lovely place to base our trip to Rome from. The staff was helpful and the amenities were first rate and the restaurants were outstanding. Our stay was amazing.
Very nice hotel in Rome. It has a lot of amenities (pool, spa etc). All staff is very attentive and friendly.
Unfortunately, our experience at this hotel left us deeply disappointed and concerned about the treatment of interracial couples by certain members of staff. I am writing this review in the hope that no other couple has to experience the same treatment we did at what is advertised and priced as a luxury establishment.
I am white/Italian and my boyfriend is a person of color. Our check-in process was initially pleasant and uneventful. However, once inside the hotel, the tone of our experience noticeably changed. Thankfully, we were only staying for one night. Had our reservation been longer, we would have canceled the remainder of our stay and chosen alternative accommodations without hesitation.
On the morning of checkout, we brought our luggage out to the car before returning for breakfast. We passed the reception desk while leaving, clearly carrying all of our belongings, including a very large bike box that would have been impossible to miss. The reception staff acknowledged us as we walked by.
When we returned a short time later and proceeded toward the breakfast area, we were abruptly stopped by one of the receptionists, Roberto, who had just seen us exiting with our luggage moments earlier. He bluntly asked whether we were guests of the hotel and requested our room number.
My boyfriend provided the room number immediately. Roberto did not acknowledge him, did not respond to him, and would not make eye contact with him. Instead, he continued staring directly at me until I repeated the exact same room number my boyfriend had already given him. Only then did he nod and allow us to proceed.
I initially stood there confused, assuming perhaps there had been some misunderstanding regarding checkout. However, it became very clear that the purpose of the interaction was simply to verify whether we actually belonged there.
We were so put off by the interaction, we turned around without breakfast and checked out immediately.
For a hotel that markets itself as luxury, this interaction was both humiliating and unacceptable. Luxury is not defined solely by appearance, amenities, or pricing — it is reflected in the professionalism, respect, and equal treatment extended to every guest. Sadly, the conduct we experienced from Roberto conveyed the opposite.
Whether intentional or unconscious, the differential treatment toward my partner was impossible to ignore. It left us feeling singled out, uncomfortable, and unwelcome during what should have been an enjoyable stay.
We travel frequently and have never before felt compelled to leave a review like this. I sincerely hope management takes this matter seriously and addresses the behavior and biases demonstrated by staff, because no guest should ever be made to feel scrutinized or lesser based on the color of their skin or the fact that they are part of an interracial couple.
Great experience at this hotel. Outstanding staff and facilities. Highly recommend the "Il Giardino d'Abruzzo" neighbourhood restaurant that's about a 10-minute walk from the hotel. One thing I would have researched better: we were originally going to be three people; my wife & son unfortunately had to cancel at last minute. The room was a perfect size for me alone, but would have been impossible for three people. Otherwise, I'd gladly stay here again.
The staff is very kind and helpful
ACCOGLIENZA
Tutto perfetto
Everything was good, but the gym is outdated, and very basic. The space seems enough to equip it nicely with additional weight devices
We booked this hotel knowing it was out of the city, this had pros and cons. Pros were that the room sizes were good for a family of 4 and that breakfast was very good, lots of choice and my wife is celiac and they could offer her choice too, staff were lovely and we ate in the onsite restaurant. The prices were not too dissimilar to what we paid in Rome for lunch and the food was good. On booking, I hadn’t realised that the outside pool doesn’t open until 1 June, however with the warmer temperatures it was opened earlier, this made a big difference. The pool is open 10-6 and is nice and deep and there is a lifeguard of duty. Although the rules are no jumping,
Something a 8 year old and 10 year old found hard to resist!
The cons are the location that it can quickly become expensive to use Taxi or the hotel shuttle to key attractions. We used the local busses and metro and it took between 45 minutes and an hour to get into the centre of Rome depending on bus availability.
With everything it is a balance of pros and cons and we are happy that we stayed here. With two children we were not out late so this was a perfect choice for us.
We were on an Insight Vacation tour. This hotel was comfortable and clean. Breakfast was good. Coffee service was problematic. Seems there should be a better way to expedite this service.
Lovely looking hotel which was very clean and tidy, hotel very modern. Rooms nice and big with big showers. Location is on the outskirts so it’s either walk miles or get taxis. There is a shuttle bus at the hotel. Taxi rank is at the hotel as well. Pool is lovely and rather deep which is nice. Outside pool bar is good too. Inside bar is nice looking. All staff in the actual hotel was nice and friendly which weee all very pleasant. Breakfast was a big sole ton which was good. Would recommend the hotel and would return. Now for the negative which is the hotel restaurant. Rather expensive with small portions. First night meal we had no faults and was very enjoyable which left a rather nice tip. However the second night restaurant visit did not go well which was like flipping a coin. On arrival I asked for my family to sit inside to keep the children out of the sun, the greater girl moaned about which was every off after a polite request made. Eventually we was told we can sit inside. After woulds other family’s asked to sit inside which they had no issues with this request and given inside straight away. Service was slow and asked for a beer which never arrived and had to re order. Other tables was given free basket of bread and we was ignored. It became very apparent we was being treated differently. We just had enough and just got out of there after paying our bill. Restaurant does need to have a bigger menu and a proper children’s menu. Who knows if we would visit the restaurant again, but would recommend the hotel by all means.
I had a very pleasant experience at this hotel. The room was impeccable, the staff extremely kind and attentive, and the atmosphere very relaxing. The varied breakfast and quality services made the stay even more comfortable. I will definitely come back and I recommend it with confidence.
The hotel isn't a modern one, but it has a nice ambience to it! The room was spacious, and it was clean. I loved that it had an iron in there. Staff were helpful, and the pool is wonderful!
The shower is in a bathtub - the drainage was extremely slow (meaning that when you showered, by the time you finished, the water was up your calves!). Also, you are unable to adjust or or move the glass shower screen.
A quality hotel in a relatively quiet location on the outskirts of the city. It takes a little effort to get between the hotel and the heart of the city, but bus services stop just outside the hotel, and there’s a metro station 20 minutes walk away.
Bedroom very spacious, comfortable and well equipped, and the shower was excellent. Complimentary bottled water and tea/coffee making facilities were a nice touch.
Attractive gardens and outdoor pool area.
Overall a good choice if you are happy being a little way from the city centre sights.
Once arrived at FCO, the hotel does have a shuttle available for a reasonable fee, cheaper than taxi or Uber. We arrived early, and room was not available, but they offered us storage. We were able to book a shuttle to (near) the Vatican from where we decided to walk on our own to wherever we wanted. They do have shuttle schedules for 3 locations at the hotel. Registration was quick and efficient. Room was clean and spacious, with all the basic hotel necessities, and bathroom included a bidet. Breakfast buffet was underwhelming, but acceptable. They had an open air pool and indoor pool, small gym and spa on the expensive side. Generally, it was a hospitable and pleasant place. We recommend it.
The Crowne Plaza Rome has a wonderful location and lovely gardens. A warm professional staff and very large modern rooms.
