one night we asked the front desk to help us with a dinner reservation for 4. we wanted sushi and the desk made a reservation for us at a sushi bar. we would have better to sit at a table so we could talk together. thank you.
Gorgeous rooms and facility. Staff exceptionally helpful and savvy.
Ha it’s expensive but that we expected
Superbe chambre incluant un Onsen. Mais vide. Dans d'autres hôtels l'Onsen était toujours prêt donc plus facile à utiliser. Personnel exceptionnel.
Leur conseil en terme de restauration très médiocre.
Incredibly beautiful hotel. Excellent location. Very attentive and polite stuff. Will repeat
Room and overall hotel were gorgeous
This modern ryokan balances charm/authenticity with modern comforts in the perfect location. It is in historic Gion near several key sights, but not on a main street so a little quieter. A couple nearby bus stops allowed us to easily explore the city. We had the suite (204) which was very spacious for my family of 3 (with teenage son) and had all the modern touches throughout (dimmable lights, heated bathroom floors, electronic shades, etc). The breakfast was bountiful and very good. Service is definitely the standout here, with everyone very welcoming and attentive. My only issue is the price. Although I don't have any major complaints, Sowaka is very expensive for what you get (to be fair I think Kyoto is expensive in general and we visited during peak cherry blossoms).
Hôtel très agréable et luxe. Nous avons tout aimé
Everything about this place is right. The staff is warm and welcoming, the design is outstanding and the location is wonderful. Even though we arrived late in the evening, we were greeted with genuine thoughtfulness ...nothing rushed. After settling in, we went wondering the streets of Gion....stunning. Our entry into Japan was just magical. Thank you Sowaka, wish we could have stayed longer! Highly recommend their early morning guided tour.
Outstanding location, incredible staff, and beautiful design. We absolutely loved this luxury ryokan (traditional Japanese inn). Location can't be beat, just steps away from historic Gion district. Many temples close by, including Yasaka temple looking down the street from the entrance, and Ninizaka and its famous pagoda nearby.
Although we stayed at this small luxury hotel (Hilton SLH program) during early blooms of cherry blossom season, they had room to upgrade us for free from a Superior room to a Deluxe room (211), recognizing my Hilton Diamond status. It was huge, with a separate living room area, a little window peeking out to a pagoda, and a stunning bathroom with cypress soaking tub, with parking lot obscured by shrubbery.
Meals in the hotel restaurant were outstanding, including their keiseki offerings. What really blew me away was the free breakfast, especially the Japanese option which was a culinary adventure, really my favorite meal in Japan!
Loved their little 4-seat bar, with an expansive selection of Japanese whiskeys.
Our only complaint was the mattress was too hard and thin. They should really add a mattress topper for their non Japanese guests.
Overall, one of our best hotel experiences ever!
Everything! Beautiful hotel, amazing and friendly staff, the food was outstanding.
Beautiful property, comfortable beds, exceptional staff, delicious restaurant!

房間戶外泡湯
Terrific place. Beautiful and restful, and really well located. The staff was amazing. There was nothing they didn't provide - it was almost like they were anticipating our every thought and need. The restaurant - Gion Loka - was fantastic. Great breakfasts - both the Western and Japanese set courses are terrific. And dinner there was amazing. My wife is a pescatarian (but no raw fish!) and they were completely ready to accomodate her needs.
We are both 70 - which made the Japanese room decor ( which involves everything being low to the floor) slightly challenging. The beds weren't futons...but they were still pretty low. So - that alone was a little tough for us!
Beautiful property and in fantastic location.
The futon were a bit hard but to be expected in a traditional ryokan
[English Version]
I am sharing this to warn fellow travelers about the unacceptable conditions of Room 111 (Casita Room) at this property. My experience was far below the standards expected of a 5-star establishment.
Extreme Noise Pollution: The bed is located just 2–3 meters from the street, separated by a wall with virtually no soundproofing. The noise from passing cars, pedestrians, and nearby shops is relentless, making sleep physically impossible.
Inadequate Service Recovery: When I reported this to the front desk, the only solution offered was a pair of earplugs. For a hotel of this caliber, offering earplugs instead of a room change for an uninhabitable room is highly unprofessional.
Poor Value for Money: Paying a premium price for a luxury stay only to receive zero rest is unacceptable.
Note on Transparency: I previously attempted to share this factual experience on other platforms, but the feedback was repeatedly removed. This raises serious concerns about the hotel’s transparency regarding negative feedback. I am posting here to ensure this critical information reaches other travelers.
