Fine for the night but a longer stay would be a struggle.
Pros:

The property was interesting & staff were as helpful as they could be. The bedding & towels were clean.

Cons:

We arrived earlier than the book-in time because we were attending a wedding nearby & needed to get changed after travelling. We were told we could have paid extra to book in early but this was the first we knew of this option. We had to get ready in the cloakroom & were offered to leave our luggage in reception which wasn’t manned all the time & we felt it was insecure. The room was extremely basic with a kettle on a tray & limited beverage options. There were far too many cushions on the bed with nowhere to put them & the pillows were lumpy & uncomfortable. We were grateful for the electric fan in our room during this very hot spell but it was noisy, as was the fan in the tired bathroom. The towel rail was broken, the tiles were cracked on the floor & the shower was a woeful hand held type not a power shower. We only had one hand towel between us but did have two bath towels. There was no mini fridge & no bottled water provided. I didn’t feel happy taking medication with water from the bathroom sink that may not have been mains water. The corridor doors leading to our room were not clearly signed & could be a potential risk if there was a fire. There were terrible stains on the carpet in one of the function rooms. All in all, the staff were friendly & mostly helpful. The cooked breakfast was ok but the making your own tea & toast was a strange arrangement. It was all a bit disjointed. The whole place could do with some TLC & a bit or reorganising. I didn’t take any photos.

Warm, Cosy, great location
Pros:

It my second time here, I really enjoy this hotel the food is excellent and so is the service and the staff are exceptional location was great for me also. Bed nice and comfortable too.

Cons:

The only negative was that there was no hot running water for the shower. So I had to take a cold one. I understand the building is very old and takes a while to heat up the pipes but even after 30 minutes of running the water it was some cold still. This the only negative comment,

Lovely old building and helpful staff but the rooms are quite shoddy and need a total revamp.
Pros:

Beautiful old building and central location.

Cons:

The hotel is dated and needs a lot of work to get it up to an acceptable standard. Room was dingy with a badly stained carpet. The whole place needed a good clean. The key to my room didn't work correctly - apparently there was a knack to how you 'wiggled' it but every time I needed entry to my room, I had to fetch a member of staff. Bad flooding outside the hotel near the carpark - I had to waddle through to ankle-deep and got my jeans soaking wet and ruined my trainers.

My expectations weren’t high, so this was a lovely surprise.
Pros:

The staff were absolutely amazing, all very kind, and they went out of their way to look after us! We arrived early, had a warm, professional greeting and were able to leave our car and luggage while we met up with friends. Two staff members ended up giving us history lessons and tours later in the evening when we returned, including places not currently used by the hotel, which was a real treat! We watched the sun set in the beautiful gardens and even had a cozy area in the oldest part of the hotel to chat with no one around. I thought it was pretty magical!

Cons:

Our room was in the oldest part of the hotel, and we were warned that the water may take a while to heat up. We only turned the hot water on and it was mostly lukewarm/never really heated up but not cold, so absolutely fine. The coffee and sausages at breakfast were not good, but I liked the hash browns, fresh fruit, and yogurt.

Convenient for our needs but most likely will not re-visit.
Pros:

Breakfast was good, served early which suited our needs. The staff were pleasant and helpful but seemed to be jack of all trades.

Cons:

Our bedroom was almost up in the attic. It was small, the bathroom was worn with marks in the bath and the curtain was old and stained, and there was no plug in the sink (the integral one had broken). The end of one of the beds was broken. The windows were dirty and didn't close properly

Beautiful location but needs updating
Pros:

Location was beautiful & central to town with access to shops & restaurants. Bar area was nice to relax in during the evening. Original features of the building were also beautiful.

Cons:

Room was very dated. Bathroom had broken toilet roll holder. Broken plug, and was not very clean. No additional pillows. No blackout curtains. Very restrictive restaurant menu. There was also quite a wait to check in.
