Nice old property but lovely on the inside and well maintained
Nothing
Excellent hotel in a perfect location for exploring London. The staff were friendly, professional, and always willing to help. The room was comfortable and spotless, and the breakfast was outstanding with a great selection of food. We especially appreciated how easy it was to walk to many of London's main attractions. Overall, a wonderful stay and we would happily return.
The only minor downside was that the windows in the room could not be opened, so there was no option for fresh air. Apart from that, everything was excellent.
Hotel is centrally located, within walking distance to Embankment and Charing Cross tube stations. Easy walking distance to Leicester Square, Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square (all within 10 mins walk) and cross the bridge to the London Eye! Perfect location to be.
On first impressions the hotel looks nice, but given the room rates there are better hotels in the neighbourhood. I had no hot running water on one morning and poor customer service, i.e. once I reported it, no one told me if or when it was going to be fixed and I ended up having to leave for work without it being resolved.
The breakfast was excellent. Dinner was also excellent with very attentive staff. The room was good. The location was perfect. A very interesting building architecturally.
Could have done without the intrusive background music on the ground floor and the bar television screen that no-one watched. It made the bar a bit like a pub.
Friendliness of staff
The size of the bed
Breakfast had a really good choice with hot and cold foods, choice of cold drinks, the room was beautiful.
I cannot think what would need changing
The breakfast food selection had many choices of fruit, pastries, hot foods and deli meats and cheese. If we were early to the breakfast, these items were fresh and tasty. But, if we came down after 9:00, many items (fried eggs, deli meats and cheeses) were stale and tired. We were able to order fresh poached eggs. Staff members were always professional and friendly. Our room was clean and quiet.
The main evening dining room menu was rather limited. For the price, we expected slightly larger portions and better service. The door from the kitchen to the dining room slammed very loudly each time a server came through. This was a loud, jarring bang. Some servers were able to come through the door and have it shut quietly behind them. Not sure why every server couldn't do that.
Located in a great central location, this property is what you would expect from a grand dame of a London Hotel. We were greeted warmly at check-in and our bags were stowed until our room was ready later in the day. Our room was very spacious and the bathroom and other amenities were very good. The bed was very comfortable. One item of note is that we had booked a river view room and unless you are on one of the top floors,(higher than 5) you will not have a view of the river due to the beautiful trees in the garden below. The breakfast buffet was quite nice with a variety of offerings. All of the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. A special thanks to the doorman (I can't remember his name) who greeted you like you were a guest in his home every time you left and returned to the property. The concierge staff is also incredibly helpful. This property was a great choice for our visit to London.
We stayed here for three nights with family members to show them the central London sights. I worked in Whitehall for over 15 years but naturally had never stayed in the area. The hotel is very comfortable and in a prime position to experience all the sights e.g. Buckingham Palace, 10 Downing Street, Horseguards Parade, Westminster Abbey etc.
There was an issue with our booking on arrival whereby the two room upgrades I had booked were not recorded on the hotel’s system but this was very quickly resolved by the team at reception, in particular the Rooms Manager, Jorge. This was an error on the part of the travel company, NOT the hotel. Given that this was the weekend when the Trooping of the Colour was due to take place the staff worked wonders to accommodate us in two upgraded rooms.
