A relaxing and enjoyable stay with a great location
Pros:

We always receive a warm welcome whenever we stay at the Mercure Southgate Exeter. The pool is one of our favourite features—it's always quiet, which makes it so relaxing. The location is excellent, with everything within easy reach, and although the car park is paid, it's very convenient to have on site. Our room was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed. Another enjoyable stay, and we'll definitely be back.

Cons:

The only downside was that the air conditioning wasn't working, so the room was very warm. There was a fan in the room, which helped, but it still got quite hot. The hotel kindly offered us a complimentary welcome drink, which was a nice touch, and there were two small bottles of water in the fridge. Unfortunately, they were sparkling water rather than still water, which wasn't to our taste.

Excellent hotel with great staff
Pros:

Lovely hotel, great breakfast and staff are excellent. This time we used the pool area and that was excellent as well. Special mention for Ella on reception who was beyond exceptional and really kind to us.

Cons:

Parking is quite expensive now

Well below expectations
Pros:

Location

Cons:

Delayed check in meant we were behind schedule for our event.
No option to look elsewhere as everywhere full for Lewis Capaldi event.
No air con in room (not new issue as taxi driver knew) on one of the hotter days of the year - we were provided with fans, but windows screwed shut so not much use.
On return bar staff disappearing without any communication mid order/service

Great value for a one night stopover
Pros:

Great location with everything within a short walk. Couldn’t get into the hotel car park but there is other parking a short walk away. Lovely reception with super friendly staff. 24 hour bar was a bonus !

Cons:

The room was a little tired and no air conditioning during the hottest week of the year wasn’t great but for the price we paid we were happy.

Pros:

Good location, good amenities, nice breakfast and friendly staff.

Cons:

Room was not as advertised. The third bed was incredibly small, the mattress was thin and didn't fit the bedframe. Unusable. The double bed was two singles pushed together, and not made up in a way that it was comfortable for two people sharing.

Air conditioning not working. We were not told in advance, and measures put in place to cool rooms were unsatisfactory.

Very poor from a 4* hotel.

The room was way too hot!
Pros:

Breakfast was great, the pool clean and staff friendly. The hotel is conveniently situated in Exeter close to the cathedral and the city center. I worked at the university, which is about 25min by foot.

Cons:

Unfortunately the AC gave in on the hottest day of the year. My room was facing south-west and got extremely warm even with a ventilator. The hotel stage was apologetic and gave customers two drink coupons, but given that the hotel is owned by a large multi-national company, a prize reduction would have been in order; the comfort of the room was really not given and the prize was way to high this way.

Great location,in need of major improvements
Pros:

Location excellent and the swimming pool was a great addition

Cons:

Cleanliness was not good, rooms were not ready at agreed check in and last victors items towels toiletries etc left in room. Air con not working only told at check in although booked in Oct 25 so plenty of opportunity. Staff told us it had been broken for some time not just recently. There were fans in room but not really ample for the weather.

Pros:

Conveniently situated for shops and city sightseeing.
Carpark has easy access.

Rooms are roomy, tidy the air conditioning was a godsend.

Cons:

The room was recently refurbished, but the bed showed signs of wear on the corners,
Which was the only issue.

Ok but reduce the breakfast prices & maybe do staff training on professionalism.
Pros:

The location was great and the room was clean & comfortable.

Cons:

We asked for a twin & even though I had an email to confirm this we ended up with a double. We could separate the beds but not the point.
Also we skipped breakfast because £16.50 is extortionate, parking was the same for a night , making the stay very expensive, if you stayed more than a night.
We also got woken at 6 am by a member of staff parking her car under our window with her stereo on full blast , not very professional if you work at a hotel!

Great hotel in a superb location
Pros:

Location, bar, swimming pool, staff, breakfast were all superb!

Cons:

It was a heatwave and the aircon is still broken but they provided two fans per room, free water in the fridge, free drinks at the bar and we didn’t have to pay for the pool as some info stated. So they did their best to compensate.

Overpriced for value
Pros:

How central it was.

Cons:

Room was tired even though we were told it was newly renovated. Stains on the carpet, marks on the walls, and broken air con.

Pros:

Location and breakfast were great

Cons:

The air conditioning didn't work and clearly this was a long standing issue that the hotel knew about according to our check un receptionist ! This factored in booking this hotel for the expensive price it was during a heat wave. Not only this the shower in the room really badly leaked and the fridge for cooling drinks and water didn't work at all in the room. I understand they are refurbishing but the room was tired and not working 😕 for nearly 200 pounds excluding breakfast this was unacceptable sadly.
