Excellent location, situated in the real heart of Reykjavík, beautiful old building. Wonderful staff ensured a very pleasant and comfortable stay; the reception staff are particularly helpful.
Room 501, nice room and good beds, but the elevator making too much noise - or else I would give 5 stars
The location is unbeatable, and the staff at checkout was lovely. However, I have a couple of small constructive suggestions for improvement:
Check-in Communication: Arriving at 9:00 AM after an overnight flight, I was initially told my room was not ready and I can check in around noon. I was not offered early check-in option upfront.
When I pushed to see if early check-in was possible, I was then offered a room for a 50-euro fee. My suggestion is to offer this paid option right away. When travelers are running on empty, clear and upfront options are deeply appreciated.
Room Amenities: The towels in the room were a bit worn out and could use a refresh to match the overall quality of the stay.
Hotel Borg charges luxury prices but delivers a dated experience. The Art Deco aesthetics are charming at first glance, but the reality is a cramped elevator, tight corridors and a general sense that the property hasn't kept pace with its pricing. Breakfast is a particular disappointment — limited spread, no real service culture, and not worth the surcharge. The hotel is clearly trading on its name and location rather than actual delivery. If you're paying top kroner in Reykjavik, there are better options.
Here’s a polished review:
Hotel Borg Review
We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Borg. The room was very spacious, and the location was perfect for exploring the city. Parking can be a bit challenging, and I wish the spa stayed open later in the evening. Other than that, everything was excellent, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Highly recommended.
We enjoyed the stay at the Hotel Borg. Very clean, nicely decorated, quiet and friendly staff. We recommend it
I'm pretty particular about hotels so I am surprised by negative reviews here. We thoroughly enjoyed the Hotel Borg, although we only stayed for one night. Our room (Deluxe Room) had plenty of space for the two of us to spread out. It was better lit than most hotel rooms, the bathroom was spacious and had a view, the floor was heated in the bathroom. The room was very clean. Our view was so interesting looking out to the other buildings. The only downside is that it was very noisy at night from the restaurants down below and we had to leave the windows open for fresh air so we heard the noise. But since it was the last night of our trip, I was okay with that.
Breakfast was a bit disappointing
All services in a very good level, the breakfast good but the cleaning of the room and in the overall surrounding areas very good.
Lovely warm welcome from the staff at the front desk.
We had to leave for the airport at 7am so missed breakfast, which we had paid for.
You need to do something about your gym. It needs to expand. Also the staff is not very friendly, they do not look you in the eye. They do not seem genuinely happy that you are there as a guest. They say all the right words but their heart is not in it.
No bellman to greet guests outside the hotel. Just someone at the front desk registration is the first person you see when entering. Terrible security and not a pleasant entry at all.
Also you closed your restaurant, why? To save money? The breakfast is the single worst thing about your hotel. Tables are not clean, grabbing a table and food is a free-for-all, there are no knowledgeable staff to direct or help. Just a terrible experience at breakfast.
I know the hotel has a lot of history, and maybe still counts as 5-star in Iceland, but it would NEVER qualify as 5-star elsewhere. 4-stars is still good, that is what Hotel Borg is. If you truly want to be 5-star you will need to invest in more and better service.
Not up to the standard of 4-star hotels elsewhere in the world: no minibar, no complimentary bottle of water upon arrival, cleanliness issues (stained bath towels), average-quality bedding, limited breakfast options, and coffee available for a fee (only a tasteless coffee in a thermos is available)
Great location
Staff were miserable. Only spoke when spoken to. No smiles/greetings. Hotel room so hot! Shower-poor installation with water flooding bathroom floor. Room overlooked black roof. Notified staff I was turning 65. We stayed 5 nights. Not even a Happy Birthday drink or note. Don’t book in advance on booking.com. Save hundreds by booking last minute. If you book ahead and room rates go down-which they did. Hotel & Booking.com won’t give you lower price. Will never book ahead of time. Room was $500/night. Definitely not worth it. Great location but stay at hotel one block away for 1/2 the price. Staff needs training on customer care. A smile and hello goes a long way.
Could not have asked for a better location, close to the bus stops for tours and for the bus trip back to the airport! The hotel is right at Parliament Square, and close to all the restaurants, night life, and museums. There was also a grocery store a couple blocks away. The front desk ladies and gentlemen were friendly and accommodating. The buffet breakfast had many options from which to choose, all delicious. The room was clean, quiet, and met our needs. Just a wonderful stay!
Good location. Room has almost no storage. To charge devices I have to crawl under the desk where the outlet is - or I can use the outlet on the wall next to the bath and hope I don't step on my devices.
The buffet was as bad as I've experienced. They were not prepared - no coffee, water, juice, salt/pepper. The selection was minimal with undercooked potatoes and the eggs were cold as the warmer wasn't turned on. The lone hostess couldn't cope. They operate a restaurant here?
I liked the style and breakfast was good (good selection of hot dishes), the hotel is not super new but it's well maintained and looks charming. My room had a second door between corridor and main "bed" place separating wardrobe and bathroom which helps with soundproofing and feels more cozy. Good curtains helped with Icelandic May nights with basically no full sunset. Location is also very convenient.
Two things which had negative impact on my experience:
1) Getting hot water takes a lot of time, so you basically wash your hands with cold water all the time and have you be patient when taking a shower. It comes eventually but it's the slowest I've ever seen (more than a minute if you're unlucky).
2) Soundproofing against corridor is good as I mentioned due to two doors. However I was able to hear other rooms lound and clear, was even awake from an alarm from the other room. My neighbors were quite during night hours so it wasn't a huge problem, but it exists (as in most hotels).
It was my first time in Iceland so it's hard to properly rate value for money, I'd say it's rather ok/good given the overall high prices in the region.
Great location near bus stop three for excursions and flybus. Had a deluxe room which was spacious and comfortable. Good breakfast in the morning. Would have been nice to have more options than drip coffee included. Long time since I’ve had an actual key for the room which was a nice touch. Liked the art deco feel and the history around the building. Would definitely stay there again.
