Berkeley Court Hotel

I found this hotel on Booking.com and carefully reviewed the available room options, descriptions and photographs before making my reservation. Based on the photographs and the information provided on the website, the rooms appeared to be clean, tidy and reasonably maintained.

The room I initially selected was described as a basement room. I understood that a basement room may be located at or slightly below ground level and, as such, should still have appropriate ventilation, airflow and some form of natural light or adequate ventilation system.

However, the room I was given was completely different from what was represented on Booking.com.

When I arrived at the hotel, the reception staff were not welcoming or professional. I was simply given a key and directed to the room.

When I went to the room, I discovered that it was located extremely far below the main level of the hotel. We had to walk down what felt like hundreds of stairs through an extremely narrow, dark and intimidating area. The entire route was damp, musty and smelled strongly of mould.

The room itself did not look or feel like a normal hotel room at all. It appeared more like a storage or basement area that had been converted into a room. It was the very last room in the building, and even the room number was different from the numbering of the other rooms, which made it appear particularly unusual.

The condition of the room was extremely poor. It was heavily damp and had a very strong smell of mould and decay. The floor was dirty and covered with stains, the beds were unstable and of very poor quality, and the mattresses were also extremely poor. There was no proper natural light, no window, and no adequate ventilation or air-conditioning.

As soon as I entered the room, I experienced a severe breathing problem because of the overwhelming smell of dampness, mould and decay. I have respiratory sensitivities and asthma, and the condition of the room made it impossible for me to stay there.

Dirty room, no hot water, no shower soap, no hand-towel.

Maybe next time I would ask for a fan in the room

The room could have been a little cleaner. It wasn’t dirty, just dusty in the bathroom.

Mice running in the rooms, black mold in the shower, ceiling had holes, dirty walls. Looked like a crime scene.

Paying £229 for this accommodation was absolute robbery. It featured a filthy shared bathroom located three floors down, and the hygiene standards were vile. I have attached photographic evidence of these disgusting conditions, including the bedroom, the single shared bathroom meant for multiple rooms, and the overall lack of basic cleanliness.

Everything. The property should not be in business. Huge environmental health issue and extremely poor standards of owners who think withholding the right to refund after 20 minutes of booking in we knew we had to leave. We were refused any form of refund.
