Good food, historic building, and friendly staff.
Ongoing renovations making noise from 8am, non functional phone in room, tired and dusty rooms with wallpaper pealing, and high price for accommodation and food.
We loved everything about this hotel and the staff were amazing. The hotel itself was very clean and tidy and they were able to cater for my dietary needs. As a coeliac, I was able to have a nice cooked breakfast and the staff were very knowledgeable about coeliacs and gluten free.

The position of the hotel
They initially gave us a room that was so noisy and it looked onto moats or rubbish. Changed rooms and the windows didn’t open and there was no air con! Rooms are very shabby and dated.
Breakfast was awful, you no longer get a breakfast cooked for you, it’s a help yourself and the quality of the food was so cheap. We chose to pay for breakfast here due to last time the food quality was lovely. They took hold of £50 pound for anything getting used which is fine however we did not use anything from the mini bar and 2 weeks on, I still havnt had the money refunded into my account. I’ve been cut off twice when I’ve rang up. I know the hotel is getting updated but it needs a full overhaul from management down.
Very comfortable bed and good view of the Keep.
The concierge as ever a shining example of Geordie hospitality.
This hotel has just introduced charging for parking via a third party app £20 for 24 hrs plus a service charge of 30 pence. One of its main attractions was free parking, taken the shine off it. The bedroom we had was a refurbished on the 10th floor, whoever did the snagging was wearing sunglasses.
Breakfast was luke warm at best, no table service for tea and coffee as it used to be.
For a 4 star independent it's living on its reputation, we have used it for the last 10 years and have noticed a steady decline, sadly we won't be returning.
Location is excellent for accessing the city on foot. Breakfast was good quality.
Check in was awful as there was a 'technical issue' where room cards couldn't be issues. The tv was broken ans we had to request for this to be fixed 3 times. Dirty cups and glasses weren't replaced. Room was directly below the nightclub which was awful. Staff just didn't care. Offered a 20% refund when checking out which we have never received. I messaged the hotel to chase this and I was ignored.
Lovely staff, convenient location, a few minutes walk from the station, characterful building, big room.
As a customer of 10 years I am disappointed to find out breakfast is 20 pp not 10. The always free parking is now 20 per night and only bookable through a annoying QR code. Check in was a 25minute waste as got given a double room when booked a twin and then given another double. 3rd time finally got the correct room. The guy parking the cars and the over worked guy doing the bar and working on his laptop at the bar were the best tbh
Ear plugs are provided as the top floor is a nightclub and being a good few floors down it was banging. If you wish for a good night's sleep forget it. Sadly this used to be a firm favourite before greed took over . Go back to the basics and turn the music down on the top floor and you redeem the reputation of this hotel
