Port Askaig Hotel

Overpriced for such poor facilities - the hotel should just knock £30-50 off the price and be done with it. There was no WiFi as advertised but the staff kindly gave me the staff WiFi. This was pretty important because there is no service at all in Port Askaig.

I stayed in room Staffa and my room smelt like mildew. Two lights in my room were broken and there was a random wet patch between the bed and the en suite wall. The sink plug was stuck in the sink so there was loads of dirt and debris from other guests to greet me when I came in - bleugh. It was also slow to drain and when I showered the basin filled quickly - needed unblocked. And maybe worst of all my room didn't lock properly or lock from the inside which made me feel really unsafe as a solo female traveller.

Some of the decor etc is a bit tired, though our room was clean and functional.

The check in process was perfunctory, to the extent that we were not even sure we were expected. We were allocated a room at the back of the hotel, 'near the wood sheds' which doesn't sound awful but was - basically a highly neglected back yard full of junk, including old paint pots, cars and yes, even some wood (mostly old palettes and packing cases). A few strings of laundry waving in the rainy breeze completed the picture.

The room itself was basic, but not clean. The room heater was covered in rust, the windows and windowsills were dirty and in dire need of a coat of paint. The 'wardrobe' consisted of a hanging basket thing which was practically useless. Luckily we spent as little time in there as possible. 1970s' chic is one thing, but this was not 'characterful' in any sense.

The grubbiness extended to other parts of the hotel as well - the carpets and window ledges in particular.

The shower was OK, but the provision of two tea-towel sized towels and one bath towel for two of us was wholly inadequate.

The internet connection was non-existent - some kind of booster was mentioned but none of our devices could connect, even to the ancient 2.4g router situated somewhere. The TV could only function via an internet connection, so that did not work either. Eventually some connectivity via the ferry terminal free wifi was possible, but only briefly from the dining room.

Finally, the price was completely out of line with the facilities, even considering the location and the time of year.

My only concern would be the price, the hotel is cosy but it’s not luxury. Perfectly nice to stay in but just a tad spenny for a night.

The facilities were dated and the room needed some renovation. But this was something the hotel informed about in their info map and was not a surprise for us. The hotel staff made the best to make up for the shortcomings. As Port Askaig has virtually no mobile net coverage, connecting to hotel wifi or subscription to the EE network is a must.

Hotel had a rather tired feel to it and could do with some renovation

Shower leaked soaking the carpet by the bed.
Door would not lock and getting the key out of the door was difficult
Hot water tap on the basin was a dribble. Waste was missing.
Towels while clean were marked grey and thin.
There was an irritating pipe hammer and vibration somewhere close to the room.
Bar.
Landlords and friends took over the bar drinking to excess. Clapping, singing, to too loud Scottish music. Swearing. I don’t mind a local feel to a bar and folk enjoying themselves. But from what I could see they drove their guests to other areas.
Food was okay, though I had a strange tuna and cheese open sandwich on toast which made the toast sloppy. The butter in the morning was rancid.

The advertised WiFi did not work. Password and router name not available. Another connection was suggested. But did not connect. Other guests said. If it connected at all it immediately dropped out.
Seems there has been a router change at some point and has not been properly set up. No surprise there.

Eigentlich beschreibt das "Was hat Ihnen gefallen?" alles. Die Bude braucht dringend eine Renovierung, aber überall! Frage ist nur, ob dann der Charme verloren gehen würde.
