We stayed two nights. First night we had a small and dark room. The staff changed it to a bigger and more comfortable room for the second night that I believe I saw on Booking.com that made me decide to stay here.
If my husband didn’t complain, we would have stayed in the same small room the second night.
Central location, friendly staff
There are many wonderful things to highlight about Hotel Muso. Firstly, location: easy walking distance to Nishiki Fish Market, east Kyoto for Gion and temples, and even good walking more north towards Nijo Castle and imperial gardens. Secondly, room and amenities: impeccably clean and very thoughtfully laid out with pristine shower and bathroom setups, luxurious hair and facial products, and very comfortable loungewear. Finally and most importantly, the staff: led by Ryo-san and his righthand person, Ryota-san, who both provided their phone numbers for any questions, as well as the rest of the staff who delivered the sandwiches and lattes with care and a smile in the morning. We received recommendations on 3 areas to eat, specific names for ramen and izakaya places, and a very sweet gift of sparkling wine for our honeymoon. Would not hesitate to stay again and recommend to everyone we know. Thank you!
Nothing to add beyond praise.
Absolut empfehlenswert.
Breakfast was a weak link. Not up to the excellence of all other aspects of the property. I hope and expect they will improve or eliminate it.
Breakfast
Everything about Hotel Muso is perfect. The location is convenient for getting to all the key sights, but it is located in an area that is away from the busiest parts of Kyoto whilst benefiting from lots of local restaurants and bars. The hotel is beautiful, styled in a typically Japanese modern and minimalist tradition. My room was carefully thought through, and my stay was very comfortable. Ryo and Ryota really did make my stay in Kyoto extra special. Their warm welcome and kindness made me feel like I had come home. Nothing was too much trouble, and they gave me lots of good advice for my time in Kyoto. I had such a wonderful time, and I am already thinking about my return trip. Thank you, Ryo and Ryota 🙏 😊
Wonderful people, very well located, nice room, all in a jackpot in Kyoto.
Nothing
unusual selections, for an american to experience, but tasty! And delivery was EXACTLY when they said it would be.
Property Owner Ryo and Ryota were exceptional and patient helping us with restaurant recommendations- reservations and trying to log on to Tablecheck….almost 1 hour of effort. Terrific local neighborhood location near to main streets- to Nishiki market or Gion Pontocho. Convenient to have a 24 hour 7-11 across the alley. Their services included a daily breakfast hotdog Arabiki, pastrami and red bean paste with butter. Daily cleaning and linen changes were available. Big beautiful marble bathroom with soak tub, rain head shower and separate toilet room. Convenient fixtures microwave and coffee maker. With only 10 rooms we were spoiled by the personal attention. Thank you for the memories!
Everything! The staff was INCREDIBLE. I want to shoutout Ryota, who was the kindest and most helpful man we’ve met in Japan. Truly an amazing gentleman. The rooms were clean and spacious, the breakfast was lovely, and the bathrooms were our favorite so far in our time here.

As a long-time journalist in the luxury lifestyle sector, I often find most hotels somewhat predictable, and I rarely feel compelled to leave reviews on Booking.com. This time, however, is a notable exception.
Even though I had secured another accommodation long before my Kyoto trip, my persistent habit of refreshing Booking.com led me to stumble upon Hotel Muso. Not only was it more budget-friendly than my original choice, but its minimalist Japanese aesthetic resonated with me deeply. In those moments when you yearn to escape the relentless clamor of the metropolis and the digital fatigue of social media, this is exactly the 'Zen' you’ve been searching for.
Geographically, the property is impeccable. Within a brief 10-minute stroll, you can reach either Kyoto Shijo or the Kamo River, allowing you to switch effortlessly between indulgent shopping and a serene riverside walk. The neighborhood is dotted with high-quality restaurants and bistros that maintain a sophisticated, quiet charm—an ideal setting for solo travelers, couples, or close friends. Connectivity is equally seamless, with both Kyoto Bus stops and Subway stations within a 10-minute walk. It is truly a rarity to find such a tranquil oasis tucked away in such a prime, convenient location.
From my professional experience, standard hotel rooms in Japan typically range between 12–15m², often constrained by narrow single beds. Yet, Hotel Muso is remarkably generous, offering a 23m² layout featuring a proper double bed and ample space to fully deploy a 26-28 inch suitcase. Furthermore, the inclusion of a split-bathroom design—separating the bath from the toilet—is a rare luxury in this category. Their mastery of spatial layout is, quite frankly, second to none.
The hotel’s bespoke toiletries are exceptionally curated, with packaging that mirrors the property’s minimalist soul.
