Terrible Ritz Carlton experience! Avoid going there, everything was like a 1 star hotel; they are short of staff, food is nothing special, and service, it is like a 0 star hotel. Our stay was a nightmare, too much noise during the night, we couldn’t sleep at all. Everything took ages, they take several minutes to answer the phone and from there, 45 minutes or more to get what you requested for as simple as towels, bell boy service, and so on. Above all, PLEASE avoid this place if you are looking for a nice hotel and a real Ritz Carlton, they completely lost their reputation here about “ We are Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen”. Definitely a terrible experience above all! So dissatisfied and dissatisfied!
We only were able to spend one evening here, but we enjoyed it tremendously. We stayed in a junior suite which had a lovely balcony overlooking the main pool area. It had stunning views at sunset and throughout the day.
I didn’t realize how family focused Ritz Carlton is. That’s absolutely great, but for a couples retreat not exactly what we signed up for. The adults pool was pretty consistent but once the nearby bar closed there was no one to monitor kids coming over to that pool. And the indoor pool area was overrun so the small hot tub, the only one, had 5-6 kids filling it a lot of the time. This was just feet away from a water slide so you can see how peace may be tricky to find.
We were greeted with a welcome champagne, although it was very flat. And after check in, we had been given a map and other information about the property but not told where our room was. So we had to walk back and ask. We had also requested a reservation via email, then asked at the desk after we confirmed over email and then got a phone call about making a reservation. It all seemed rather disjointed.
The rest of our service experience was fairly mixed during our stay too. The pool attendant was very nice and checked back on us to make sure we had what we needed. Anton bumped into us before our dinner and was amazing. He made sure the restaurant was going to be open still since our reservation seemed late, and he also ended up being our server. He was very kind, explained everything and really was the reason we enjoyed our stay and our evening so much.
There are stunning old buildings on the property. There’s also a golf course. But even the indoor bar area didn’t seem to restrict kids.
We had an amazing dinner on property which was at AQUA. It seems like this is a summer thing, and I would highly recommend it. We’ll try to post that review there.
Breakfast was included and it was a very impressive spread. You had meats, cheese, fruits, pastries, breads, eggs, bacon and sausage and fresh made eggs by someone in the kitchen if you wanted. There was an assortment of juices and coffees too.
We went early which allowed us to have a great seat and view of the outside area. By the time we left at 9 there was a line waiting to be seated (although there were plenty of seats, it was just backed up).
Our service at breakfast was a little rough. I had to order coffee twice, asked for a take away lid for my coffee and never saw her again and the daily juice she explained was orange and carrot, but it was actually carrot ginger. But given it was a buffet, these were fairly minor issues but not what you’d expect either.
This is a stunning property and if you’re going to be there and not necessarily touring Sintra I would highly recommend it. It’s pretty remote, so not that convenient to sightsee.
Big in all terms. An amazingly large property, manicured and taken care of pretty well. Rooms are large and well appointed, breakfast great, the spa nice and the grounds wow. Large bathrooms, very nicely done. Something special was room service. One night the restaurant had an event and was late for the bar to serve food. The surprise was the menu, the quality and the service. A salad and a risotto, wow.
Fantastic hotel! One of the best I've ever stayed. I had my 2 kids, aged 5 and 8 and there was so much for them, from outdoor playground, obstacle courses, to indoor bouncy castle, soft play and two pools. But also it's a luxury hotel with a very sophisticated feel, so it doesn't feel at all like the children's facilities take over. The room had a turn down service as well as a regular make up room service so it was always clean. The breakfast included was phenomenal. Very well staffed and super clean. Polite and friendly staff also. Ice lollies given at the swimming pool as well as humous, vegetables and pineapple drinks and mineral water. We were thoroughly spoiled. We travelled as a family as well as with friends who also had a child. Onyl 30 minutes from Lisbon and 20 minutes from the beaches. Ubers are cheap to get around. I would highly recommend this hotel.
Alt var top klasse selvom der er nogle få steder der skal genopfriskes. Men det gjorde ingen forskel - Det er et fantastisk sted

Loved the people, the vibe and all the facilities
It was a bit noisy in the rooms. Could hear many neighbours.
Muito confortável. Quartos amplos com terraço e uma vista maravilhosa
Todo fue genial
Getting away from the heat of Lisbon was a relief. This hotel is situated in a forested area close to Sintra. You feel like you are in the midst of nature. The Ritz name doesn’t figure at all when you are there, other than the name plate at the front entrance, but they certainly live up to Ritz reputation for luxury, service, cleanliness and overall vibe.
We stayed three nights. The room was well organized and spacious enough. There was a great patio. All amenities that you would expect. The fitness room was awesome. Large and spacious with all the weights and machines you would expect to find in a city gym.
We had dinner at Midori which was excellent (although a little on the “Sterile” side) and the tapas restaurant which was livelier and had excellent food too.
Breakfast is a real treat. The buffet is huge and you can order à la carte. Great service. In fact, the entire hotel was well serviced including drinks at the pool.
We did have one “complaint” or note to make, though. This resort caters to families, especially with younger children. They are all over the place (which is fine, except if you are looking for a more romantic and less hectic setting). They had a room with games and a bouncy castle. There is mini golf, trampolines, playground equipment, people dressed as animals at the breakfast restaurant. The pool was overrun with kids (there is an adult pool though). Overall, great for families and less great for couples.
I’m not sure we would come back, but that is because we have seen what the Sintra area has to offer. If we did return we would likely come back at a time when kids are in school. Overall, great value for the money.
Penha Longa Resort in Sintra is nothing short of magical, and after five unforgettable nights, we’re already counting down until our return. From the moment we arrived, the setting captivated us: rooms with breathtaking forest views, a location that puts Sintra town, Cascais, and Lisbon all within easy reach, and facilities so comprehensive we genuinely never wanted to leave.
What elevated this stay from beautiful to truly special was the staff. Matilde, who manages the breakfast area, deserves particular recognition. Every single morning she greeted us by name, asked about our plans for the day, and offered wonderfully bespoke recommendations for our trips to Cascais, Sintra town, and Lisbon. On our final morning, she surprised us with a thoughtful parting gift, pastéis de nata and chives from her own garden, and it was lovely to hear about her passion for gardening. Her warmth and genuine interest in our experience made every breakfast a highlight.
Alexander, who handled our bags and showed us to our room, was equally impressive. He took real care walking us through the room’s features and the hotel’s facilities, going well beyond what was expected. He mentioned he’s pursuing a Marriott management course, and we have no doubt he’ll excel.
The B Lounge team also stood out, especially given how busy things were with the World Cup in full swing. Julia P was a standout, remembering our names and orders instantly and always asking about our day trips with genuine curiosity. Balthazar brought great energy and sharp World Cup insights, clearly a natural in hospitality. We also briefly met Anton, the manager, whose humor and warmth left a strong impression.
One piece of feedback we feel compelled to share, only because it contrasted so sharply with everything else: a reception team member (we believe his name was Viktor) didn’t acknowledge my Marriott Titanium status or the benefits tied to our booking through a Marriott STARS agent at check-in. More concerning, on our second-to-last night, he called our room at 2am asking us to move a car we didn’t have, then hung up without apology when we clarified the mix-up. It was a small blemish on an otherwise flawless stay, but worth flagging given the exceptional standard set by everyone else.
This trip came together last minute, but Penha Longa has firmly secured a spot on our return list. Between the setting, the facilities, and a team that made us feel genuinely cared for, this is luxury hospitality done right.
My husband and I stayed at this resort for two nights. The property is gorgeous and very family oriented. We ate at Arola one night for dinner. The restaurant service was great, the food was wonderful and it was nice to spend a night enjoying this beautiful hotel. We loved our room. We had a junior suite. The room was huge. The morning breakfast had so many things to choose from and one of my favorite breakfasts in Portugal. If you are looking for a resort style stay this is your hotel. My only complaint was I wish the resort stores were open earlier. I saw a pair of flip flops I wanted and was unable to get them because the store opened late afternoon. We were moving on to our next stop.
