The Sentinel Hotel presents itself as Small Luxury Hotel. It is a nice hotel, but a luxury hotel it is not. We’ve stayed at many actual Small Luxury hotels in the US and Europe. The Sentinel was surprisingly disappointing.
We spent six nights there at the end of August 2026. We upgraded to an Executive King room. At first glance the room looked fine, but after a few days the shortcomings became obvious.
In no particular order, the amenities beyond a small square of soap were pretty much nonexistent, unless an in-room coffeemaker is a luxury amenity.
The towels were small and rough, not what you’d expect at a luxury hotel.
After two nights worn bathrobes disappeared, but never replaced. When we did ask for 2 bathrobes, they brought one.
Housekeeping apparently forgot to dust.
The furniture is dated, heavy, and worn.
Thursday afternoon one of the two elevators was out of service. Saturday night both were out, for hours. I had to walk up six long flights of stairs after dinner to get up to the room.
The only great part of our stay was the restaurant Jake’s Grill. Outstanding no matter the meal, and a terrific happy hour.
I was staying solo to take a PSU class and enjoy some sightseeing. The location was very convenient. Hotel interior is beautiful and front desk staff were all very kind and personable. Rooms were nice with comfy beds and good water pressure in the shower. Elevators were slow and city noise leaked in the old windows. Would stay again.
The Sentinel is absolutely beautiful! Our two rooms were spacious, spotless, and incredibly comfortable, and the staff was professional, warm, and welcoming from start to finish. The hotel has such a luxurious, high-end feel while being perfectly located right in downtown Portland. We especially loved the Concierge Floor, with its gorgeous skylight and private lounge, which was a wonderful space to relax and unwind.
We also dined at Jake’s Grill twice during our weekend stay, and both meals were fantastic! The food, service, and overall experience were consistently excellent, making it a favorite part of our visit. Every detail at The Sentinel made our stay feel special, and we would absolutely love to return!
Great location, professional staff. Unique building, in the lobby every day from 5-6 a wine hour which was a great place to have a splash and discuss dinner plans. We had a king suite which was spacious and included a fireplace, nice view from the sixth floor. Bathroom could be a little more comfortable as the shower is very small and dark, also no place to spread out your things while getting ready. Very clean though, and comfortable bedding. Our room also included access to a living space on the same floor that had a variety of snacks and cold items such as cheese and yogurt and sparkling water. Overall would recommend!
Not a 5 star hotel. Nice bed and water pressure in the shower which is part of how I rate hotels. Not 5 star resort linens, towels and amenities
The entrance of the hotel lobby and the lobby is no doubt beautiful. The rooms however are smelly, old and musty. The air conducting and the fire place (fake) were so so loud that it kept starling us awake the whole not. The bathroom was of a weird motel and not the nice luxury hotel it claims to be. They charged us 78 dollars for pet accommodations and said the would bring up a bed and food as well as bowls. The bed was very flat and gross and thin, the food was a handful of kibble (literally). No one was helpful and no one wants to work hard to make you comfortable, this hotel is Portland in a nutshell. Ugh. I almost checked out early in the middle of the night because I couldn’t stand to stay there one more minute.
This is a hidden gem in Portland. Our room was absolutely amazing. Staff was knowledgeable and helpful. My only criticism is the wine bar. Extremely sales pitchy. Claimed they couldn't sell bottles if you weren't a wine club member.
Disappointed, Room was small, dark and showed obvious wear. What happened to the mini bar? Has always been my favorite hotel unfortunately will stay elsewhere.
We stayed at The Sentinel for our anniversary. It’s a beautiful, historic building in a great downtown location. Our room was comfortable and the balcony was lovely.
Decent place but I wouldn't say luxury. For Suite options, the lounge access was quite limited in snack and drinks options.
Beautiful “old school club”
Interiors with a lot of wood coffered ceilings and confortabile amenities. Staff was exceptionally helpful kind and always ready to help. Valet parking is a great option as you can simply unload the car and they will take care of it, which is very useful when travelling with a large group and small children.
Nothing.
Convenient location for public transit, good restaurant in lobby. Decent ramen place down the block and near Powells books
The room was cozy and spotless. The hotel’s location and ambiance were fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed the decor of the hotel and rooms. The restaurant and wine lounge were also great places to visit. I highly recommend the Sentinel! It’s conveniently located and offers everything I needed for my trip. The wine and happy hour were a delightful surprise. Cheers!
Wow! Incredibly impressed. I travel a ton, and the quality and value of this hotel is exceptional. Friendly and efficient staff, beautiful rooms, great atmosphere and location. Feels very luxurious. The 6th floor with the skylights is lovely. It would have been a good value at twice the price I paid - I'm honestly baffled its not much more expensive. I stayed for 2 nights and will absolutely stay there again if I'm in Portland even though I usually stick with another hotel brand for points. This was one of the best hotels I've stayed in.
