Location and vibe was great
The rooms are super dated, paid the same as friends that was staying and our rooms were very different. Mine was stuck in the 1980s - could do with modernisation in the rooms.
Booked a table at the restaurant as part of my 50th birthday celebrations. Lovely setting in a beautiful town. Good ambience, delicious food and attentive staff. Worth the 30 min drive from where we were holidaying. Free parking out front after 6pm. Worth making a reservation. Feels quite a special location.
Been here many times, wonderful staff and the food is equally amazing...
We stayed two nights last weekend..we had a twin room wth very comfortable beds.
The layout of the hotel is excellent with interesting and flexible areas too sit in.
All the food was excellent and all the staff welcoming, friendly and efficient.
Especially as our car had broken down and everyone helped with parking and engaging with the RAC and a taxi to our next destination.
Thank you all.
Had coffee and cocktails in the lounge. All excellent. The Angel remains the only quality place to visit in BSE. Not cheap but worth it.
The Hotel is situated in the centre of Bury St Edmunds, a fantastic location, and surprisingly peaceful. Our room was very nice: clean, comfortable, and with a shower that delivered outstanding pressure. The shower curtain was a little bold in its design choices, but it added character!
The reason this is a 4-star rather than 5-star review comes down entirely to the parking situation. On arrival, we were asked to hand in our keys so the car could be moved if needed — it never was. The in-room information book gave no clear guidance either: it vaguely mentioned that parking charges "may apply at some point," with no indication of when, how much, or under what circumstances. When we checked with reception the evening before checkout, the response was muddled — first something about a ticket being placed on our car, then a clarification that it would be a parking permit. The full picture only became clear at checkout: the 11am checkout meant the parking permit placed on our car was valid until... 11:01. When I queried this I was told a complimentary slip left in our car should have prevented any issue, but that mix-ups had been known to happen before. Better communication and staff training around this process is really needed.
On a positive note, Rihanna in the bar was warm and genuinely helpful — a real asset. The breakfast team, though seemingly running on a very generous amount of caffeine, were cheerful and pleasant throughout
Extremely handy for the whole town. Really good to have a nice table and two chairs in the room as we have a game we like to play.
All great
To celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary we visited The Angel for lunch. We had not booked but welcomed and seated to our choice. We were served by Desire whom catered to our every need. The service and food and drink was excellent and we will be back.
My girlfriend surprised me with a stay at The Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds for my birthday, and I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
From the moment we arrived, everything felt special. The welcome was warm and genuine, and that level of care never dropped throughout our stay. Every member of staff we encountered was kind, attentive, and seemed to genuinely enjoy making our visit memorable.
The room itself was beautiful—comfortable, well-presented, and full of character. It struck that perfect balance between luxury and homeliness, making it easy to relax and enjoy the occasion.
Dinner in the restaurant was absolutely flawless. The food was exceptional, with every dish cooked to perfection and presented beautifully. The service matched the quality of the food—attentive without being intrusive, and always delivered with a smile. It really felt like a special birthday meal.
Breakfast the following morning was just as impressive. A great selection, perfectly prepared, and again served by staff who couldn’t do enough for us. It was the perfect way to round off the stay.
From start to finish, everything about our visit was spot on. It’s clear that a lot of care goes into every detail, and it made the whole experience feel effortless and truly enjoyable. I’m incredibly grateful to my girlfriend for such a thoughtful gift—and to the team at the hotel for making it so memorable. We’ll definitely be back.
Imposing historic ivy-covered hotel smack in the centre of town. We had a spacious and pleasant bedroom with a good view of the Abbey gatehouse and gardens. There is limited parking in the public car park in front of hotel. The hotel reception area was very busy and noisy. The check in process was a bit slow.
We had such a wonderful stay at the Angel Hotel and couldn’t recommend it more highly! From the moment we arrived, the porters looked after our car with care and waitresses made us feel so welcome — nothing was too much trouble, and they truly went above and beyond for our family.
The housekeeping team kept everything absolutely spotless, with incredible attention to detail that really made a difference. It’s clear the whole team takes great pride in what they do.
We also treated ourselves to afternoon tea, which was fantastic, and enjoyed delicious fish and chips the next day both were top quality!
If you’re looking for a hotel with outstanding service, warm hospitality, and a relaxing atmosphere, this is the place to stay. We’ll definitely be coming back!
Went for lunch and had the Fish and Sips. Really nice boutique hotel on the square opposite the cathedral. Food really good, staff friendly, good value for money and nice atmosphere
Very disappointing we were served the wrong afternoon tea despite me checking the sandwiches were dry they said thanks for letting them know and that was it no offer of goodwill I asked and was ignored do not recommend
As mentioned a number of times on TA, noise & the quality of some bedrooms is a real
problem especially at £200+ per night. We viewed our fellow guest bedrooms and some had clearly been updated however ours was sadly in need of renovation. Facing a road, the room had one window containing two large panels of 3mm glass (probably fitted in the 1970's) which could not be fully closed & was covered in condensation when we entered. The noise from passing cars, people & motorbikes throughout the night made sleeping near impossible.

We have just returned from a stay at The Angel Hotel and we were there for DB&B celebrating our wedding anniversary. What a wonderful stay we had. Room was beautiful, copper bath just divine and food incredible. Lovely town yo browse around. Thoroughly recommend 👌👏
This is a lovely historic building in the heart of Bury. Staff are very professional and helpful. Rooms are all to a high standard. I had a very superior room, huge, free standing bath, writing desk, arm chairs and spacious shower / toilet room. Bathrobes are provided and lovely fancy mugs for tea plus border biscuits. Very comfortable but be aware there are lots of flights of steps of various sizes and rooms at the front can be noisy from traffic. The restaurant was also extremely noisy, I ate in the bar area instead. Food is rather "cheffy", very gourmet. Great wine selection. Breakfast has to be ordered rather than a buffet and portions are very generous.
Typing this at 715am on a Saturday morning, woken at 6.45 by the very intrusive road noise. Room 118: one of their best rooms, has 3 large sash windows which do nothing. Don't stay in this room.
The restaurant and bars were great, the hotel has a great vibe.
But, it is seriously let down as the quality of sleep is poor. We have stayed here many times, the last was dreadful for the same reason (disruptive room noise) and were upgraded to this room by way of an apology, not good enough.
So, we won't be back us and the Angel are now done!
A lovely looking setting for Afternoon Tea, but actually the chairs were too low compared to the table.
The food was good quality, and some of the hot savouries, especially the lamb, were superb.
There were 3 small sandwiches per person, and completely contrary to my expectations they were made with thick sliced bread. Sandwiches traditionally are made with thinly sliced bread. The fillings were ham, smoked salmon, and a fairly slimy egg mayo. OK, but apart from the salmon, nothing special.
The scones were good, and whilst I would have preferred to have individual portions of jam and cream there was plenty between us.
There was a great choice of tea, and some coffee.
The whole atmosphere was ‘off’. Instead of a relaxing environment, often with unobtrusive music, it was loud, busy with an almost constant stream of people passing by, and another customer had very strongly smelling fish and chips.
The reason I have not given a lower score is solely due to our waiter. When I eventually could stand the constant motion around me no more I complained to him. He immediately found us another table in a quiet corner, transferred everything over, and even brought us fresh tea. We ended up having the relaxing time we had hoped for from the outset. I wish I had asked his name.
The hotel itself is lovely and a great location. Parking is very near so excellent for not so mobile people.
This is my 3rd time eating there and on other occasions it’s been ok but today was disappointing. I had steak and chips. Whilst the steak was lovely somehow the mushroom was burnt and the chips had obviously been warmed and cooked again. They were black, dry crisp and hollow. Very poor when you serve food at quite high prices.
We had the Valentine's package. Overnight stay, dinner in the vaults, live music, breakfast in the morning.
The room was lovely. I've stayed in a lot of hotel rooms lately and this was probably the best overall. There is usually something that you can fault or feel could be changed, but this was literally faultless.
The dining experience was perfect. A set menu is always a bit scary but the food was amazing. The breakfast was great and the service throughout the whole experience was amazing.
Points of note just as feedback.
The booking material had two different check out times. One said 11 and one said late checkout up until 12.
There was mention in the booking of a complimentary cocktail on arrival. This was not mentioned to us when we arrived and so I didn't bother to pursue it. I didn't need a cocktail ( although I would have drunk it 😂) so it wasn't an issue, just something to maybe clarify for the future?
