A true hidden gem well worth a visit and perfect commuting in to the city.
Pros:

The building, the gardens, it's location and the food.. Wow, quite possibly the best hotel food my wife and i have eaten. The fact the fish was so fresh and white with huge flakes. We live on the coast and dont get fish this fresh locally, so to travel 160 odd miles south inland to receive it at this quality was supurb. This is absolutely a hidden gem and totally unexpected, specially for the price we paid. Perfect commuting distance in to the city far enough away to think your out in the wilds but close enough for US embassy appointments, tourist attractions etc

Cons:

Just a personal preference, I would like a bigger bed. Myself being on the larger side find a regular double slightly overcramped (specially during the current heat wave) for my wife and I, but it was manageable and very comfortable. The shower wouldnt get hot no matter how it was set, luke warm at best but to be honest in this weather, it was ideal after the 3 hour drive.

Does not look like the pictures
Pros:

Lovely grounds and approach, easy to park and quiet.

Cons:

Firstly, I'd like to say that this feedback is based entirely on the hotel and not the staff. The staff were all good and accommodating and I feel like they must have to do a lot of fire fighting.
We arrived after a very long day and the room for 3 we were initially put in (The Victoria) was really awful. It was honesty the most depressing hotel room I've been given. The walls were covered with scuffs and stains, there were cobwebs everywhere, the bathroom was very jaded and fixes had clearly been bodged (the silicone around the shower had been smeared in with clear finger tracks everywhere). Mostly all of the drawer and cupboard handles were loose, there was only one bedside light and the air con wasn't working. I could continue... However, we asked to move room and the guy on reception moved us immediately without question. We were moved to a significantly nicer room in the main house (Park Lane) the comparison was night and day. If we'd have been put in this room in the first place, this review would have been largely positive.
Overall the building could be stunning, but it desperately needs some renovations, it's all just a bit jaded.
The breakfast was fab, no complaints there.

Safe and Secure setting
Pros:

Absolutely perfect 2 night stay for our family. A friendly welcoming hotel in a beautiful historical building. The location is very quiet and perfectly safe. We were on a golfing trip and I always usually bring our clubs into the room but I felt perfectly safe leaving them in the car on their secure car park. Friendly welcoming staff. Super huge very comfortable bed with soft linen bedding. Although it is dated in parts this just adds to its charm, it is perfectly clean and a welcome contrast to clinical premier inn type of hotels.
