The stay was amazing. The hotel is beautiful and in the perfect location to walk to Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and so many other points of interest. The room was great, huge and beautiful as well. We had a suite and did not want to leave. Every member of the staff was also so friendly and willing to help with whatever we needed. Excellent morning buffet with attentive service and a great mix of healthy and sweet options, including lox, a juicer, homemade waffles, meats, cheeses, made to order omelettes, yogurts, pastries and so much more. The area is safe and the taxi stand just outside made exploring very convenient. I was hesitant at first based on some reviews that the hotel could use some updates, and I usually prefer more modern accommodations, but I could not have been happier with this choice and will stay again without hesitation the next time we are in Rome. It’s really all part of the charm! We could not have asked for a better stay for our first time in Rome!
The location was very nice.
Every time i left the room, my key card won’t work on my return. It became very frustrating. There was no shower gel and i had to go to reception twice to get a replacement. i left my shoes out to be shined according to the in room directions, yet they were untouched in the morning. The hotel is definitely in need of a serious touch up. Walls need cleaning and painting.
We had a very nice standard large room overlooking a quiet side street. We had good service. Beautiful and spacious marble bathroom. It’s a historic hotel so of course it may look “dated” to some. Excellent location near Villa Borghese with walking distance to Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. Be prepared for mob scenes at major tourist attractions.
This hotel is NOT it. DO NOT GO HERE. There is only ONE IRON AND ONE IRONING BOARD. The whole building is dated, and everything is worn and old. The TV alone is from the 2010s. The gym lockers are destroyed inside. Why am I paying all this money for a sub-par experience? DO NOT STAY HERE. As a 20+ year, 1,000,000+ point Marriott member, to another member: go to another Marriott. You have been warned. This one is a shame to the brand.
Beautiful hotel, very comfortable hotel room. Great bed!!! What a delight to be treated well at the end of a two week trip to Italy. The hotel is very convenient to shopping, restaurants and the park.
My family and I have been returning to this hotel since the 90s. While the hotel herself has been through many changes since then, the one thing that has remained constant is the warmth of the staff. The roman experience and the hotel herself would never felt complete without them.
Warm thanks to Marco from Ischia for his sincere and kind help, Signor Roberto the night concierge, and a lobby staff from Artena that I couldn't not remember his name but was kind enough to help me when I needed assistance during my last day of stay there.
Last but never least, the talented Luca di Francia. The true artist behind the bar who was always a good friend, making me feel like I had truly come home every time I visited Rome (not to mention the beautifully crafted drinks he curated for us).
Location and heritage. Good breakfast.
Super fanè and old. And not particularly clean. In our room we had a TV that had more than 20 years and all the cables were unplugged.
We have stayed at the Westin Excelsior 15 times ,on every visit to Rome, and it is always an absolutely wonderful experience in everyway. The Westin is in a great location, with old world elegance and charm. The service is exceptional starting from the greeting of the doormen to welcoming reception staff, and continues through housekeeping, dining room, the cocktail lounge, and all the many amenities offered.
The rooms are immaculate, spacious, & well appointed. Sleeping is easy with quiet rooms, beautiful linens & comfortable beds. Their breakfast buffet is abundant and beautifully presented in a comforatble dining room or lovely outdoor area. The staff is outstanding for being highly professional and also very welcoming . They acknowledge and appreciate Marriott members for their loyality. We look forward to our stay at the Westin for the hotel itself, equal to our visit to beautiful Rome.
La posizione
I servizi
We were at the Westin Excelsior for 2 days in April. We were not at all impressed. The Westin Excelsior is old, dated and worn out. It has seen better days. The huge hotel has grand elements and one can envision its past glory days but they are long past. Now, you find faded and outdated furniture, stained carpets, dirty bathrooms, cracking paint and masonry. chipped wood and a quickly deteriorating appearance. Not only has the physical property of the hotel deteriorated but the staff are also old, decrepit and worn out. There are angry middle age men at the front desk and the concierge who have an jaded attitudes and with their hands out, always looking for a tip. Not once did they open the door for my wife or any other guests as they entered the building but stood around chatting with each others. If this hotel did not have its location on Via Veneto, it would be a 2-3 star hotel at best and NOT a 5 star. I would not stay there again and would not recommend to anyone else.
Ambiente elegante e molta professionalità
Nulla
This hotel is nothing but old school perfection. Let's start with the staff. They were outstanding from check in to check out. The manager even escorted us to the upgraded room. scratch that. Make that the upgraded palace.
the bathroom was nothing short of elegance with modern convenience. I wish that I had the time to splash in the jacuzzi!
I never had the time to use it, but there are lounge recliners while you are watching some TV while enjoying your evening beverage. How lovely!
The breakfast was yummy. I always have a custom omelet. Then hit the fruit and bread buffet. I loved the fresh pineapple and kiwi. While the omelet is in the pan, you can indulge in meat selection and the fresh squeezed OJ. :) For those of you that love coffee, the quality is excellent.
I don't like modern, sterile hotels. I prefer places where doing things right was important. And the room was quite!! I am too old school and am so comfortable from the moment I pull into the lobby. I would not change a thing. I will continue to stay at the Westin whenever I can. It will always be my first choice for Roma!
I can see why some people have criticized this Westin. It does have some wear and tear and in places can feel outdated. However, in exchange for that you get a true classic elegance that you simply don't find in newer hotels. Places like a modern Ritz can be nicer and much fresher but there is simply no replicating the old classics. Everything feels grand and although not every surface is luxurious you can tell that the size alone is part of the luxury. Rooms are very spacious and although some of the rooms can be a bit plain, they are still classic looking and the bathrooms are quite nice.
The bar and breakfast offerings are top notch. The staff were super friendly and accommodating. The pool really feels like an old world hotel and given you're not far from the center of Rome, feels like a real luxury. They have spa services and a gym as well.
I have utilized my points to stay at the Westin Excelsior Hotel, Rome, Italy from 21 to 24 March 2026 inclusively. Yet, I was appalled by the service I got which did not reflect the quality of the 5* Marriott Brand of hotels. Below is a list of actions/viewings which, in reality, did not reflect the Hotel's rating:
The receptionists did not tidy their counter as mandarin oranges were scattered and exposed let alone the receptionists did not pay attention to incoming guests.
Two separate bellmen escorted me to my room, one of whom did not bother to carry anything I had in my hands. The other gentleman delivered my luggage. He did nothing but complain about the weight of my luggage, which by the way was within the acceptable range of any worldwide airlines!!
Whether I booked a room in funds or in points, I expected the room to be in the top standard. It was not!
The room lacked a welcome dish of fruit or anything similar. The room looked clean, yet the carpet was stained due to its overuse. The living room light switches did not function. The sockets were far from any table or flat surface. Three cupboards were in the corridor, only one had hangers which were not enough for a guest in a suite. One of the light white curtains had a burnt out hole! The housekeeping managed to organise (not clean) the bedroom and bathroom and failed to remove the rubbish from the living room's bin!! The room lacked a kettle and coffee/tea capsules/bags. Nowadays, 4* hotels supply a hot kettle! The side (magnifying) mirror in the bathroom had no turn on/off switch! It was there as a show off!
I requested a one double bed. The room had two beds next to each other made into one bed!! The hand soap bar did not lather. Nowadays, 5* hotels keep the soap bar as a supplement to the main liquid soap dispenser!
Though the suite was designed in an Imperial Decor, its finishing was in a bad taste reflecting a decoration of decades ago. The paint was spalding. The design motifs had stains of white paint let alone their edges were chipped! The door hinges had careless door paint. The cupboard hinge appeared throughout the length of the door.
Yet, to the Hotel's credit, the choice of the toilet paper was of a great quality far better than many other hotels.
Most of the food varieties had intolerances in the main restaurant's menu!! The male waiters did not have the ability to communicate and deliver. To the Hotel's credit, their female waitresses were friendly and understanding.
Frankly, I was really disappointed with Westin Excelsior Hotel; rated as 5*. With the treatment/experience I had, I would advise colleague visitors to re-consider other options within the Marriott Brand of hotels.
Good location for navigating to Spanish Steps and less expensive restaurants. Grand building but could use some updates. Hotel restaurant is Very expensive. As Viking cruise guests, breakfast service was sub par. First breakfast buffet- items were limited, pancakes and waffles were hard. Very early departure the next morning, one hotel employee spent the first hour trying to fix the only coffee machine, small pastries and packages of cold snacks were served. Room thermostat could use directions.
My wife and I had a great stay. The hotel is a bit dates but the location is great and the Romes are large especially for Europe. We had a great check in process and felt Welcomed. I was recognized as a lifetime Titanium Bonvoy member. Ricardo and Davis were great. The breakfast spread was exceptional.
The concierge team was so helpful as we arranged for 4 rooms to be close by. They also upgraded us to a lounge suite
They also delivered birthday cake and bubbles not long after we arrived. A wonderful experience
Just had a wonderful stay at the Westin Excelsior. The service was absolutely top notch, including the front desk staff, concierge, bell service and all of the wait staff. They were all so accommodating. Prior to our stay, they ensured we would have connecting rooms since we were traveling with children and when we checked in, we were pleasantly surprised that not only were they able to check us in early, they also upgraded our rooms, which were so comfortable and luxurious. We didn't want to leave. This is my second stay at this hotel and I look forward to returning again next time I visit Rome.
