As you approach Shrigley Hall the setting and views are beautiful, and that carries through to the entrance and reception area. But once you get beyond that façade you start to see the holes in the carpet, damaged doors, worn bannisters…all signs that the place badly needs a refurb. Our family room was probably really good 20 years ago, but now the yellowed plastics, mouldy tiles and broken fittings make it look very tired. To be fair the room was a decent size, the beds were comfortable and we slept OK despite the heat.
Our evening meal was mixed, the mackerel pate was good but the celeriac remoulade it came with had way too much mustard in it, and the bread had obviously been sitting around as it was rubbery. The main course of sea bass with a bean ragout was very good. What felt very strange was that the staff mostly seemed inexperienced but there was nobody managing the restaurant. The same was true at breakfast, which – despite having to book a time slot – was extremely busy and just felt chaotic, again with nobody managing what was happening. So food was running out and there was a delay in replacing it, only one coffee machine was working… The same lack of management was evident in the bar, where staff struggled to serve the beers on tap – the heat appeared to be causing problems – but nobody was clearly taking charge of the situation.
Having said all that we survived without any serious cause for complaint, its just that the hotel presents itself as a country house hotel and charges accordingly, but it just does not live up to the quality of accommodation and service that you would expect to come with that.
Lovely food, stunning grounds
Couldnt get into spa, bar very expensive, too many events on which disrupted our taxis by half an hour. Waitessing staff were useless bar one or two.
Room wasn’t at all what we expected and the music from a wedding didn’t stop till 3 in the morning
The food
Good setting
No fans available, no housekeeping, no peace and quiet, no staff smiles...
We attended a wedding and it was perfect..x
I loved everything.
The spa
The rooms are not clean and stains on the bed
Everywhere needs a freshen up as it’s very dated it doesn’t feel clean at all
Location, the grounds were stunning. Staff were friendly. Our dog was allowed. Outdoor pool was stunning but the cost was over the top.
Food was reasonably good. Orangery, sit outs were good.
The room quality was quite poor. My son’s room was very dirty, stains on the WC, bath tub, stains on the sofa bed, cobwebs, muck everywhere. Not at all the standards we expected from a hall of this size and repute.
The spa and staff was amazing the prompt was outstanding so pictures
The building the grounds
Some of the staff where nice
Our room didn’t lock and when we got a replacement it had hair in the bed: both rooms having below average mattresses and got horrible customer service from one of the managers, an Asian man who was witnessed to throw abuse to the receptionist. The food served in the restaurants was okay, but the service was lacking
Me and my boyfriend visited Shrigley Hall as a staycation for 2 nights and we have to say we were blown away. We were greeted by a lovely gentleman who kindly upgraded our room for us and we had a gorgeous room overlooking the golf course and the Manchester skyline. That evening we also went for a 10/10 dinner at the hotel restaurant and the food was absolutely exceptional and was topped off at the end when we were pleasantly surprised that you get a discount on food if you’re staying in the hotel, bill was meant to be over £100 but was brought right down. We then ended the evening with some delicious cocktails in the courtyard bar with such lovely staff members! The following day we had the spa booked and safe to say we made the most of our time. We also ate in the spa cafe which was expensive but worth it! Probably one of the best spa breaks we have been on and will 100% be returning!
This was a birthday present for me and my first time coming to Shringley Hall...really enjoyed my time and my treatments from Kate were amazing ; what a lovely lady and knowledgeable. Will definitely come again
Experience overall was great
The location is incredible. All staff extremely welcoming. A good variety of characters. The atmosphere is a good blend of relaxing and upbeat. It is quite euphoric and doesn’t feel real at times it’s that pleasant. 11/10
I could see how some people wouldn’t like the boystrous nature of the golf club but for me that added to the experience and introduced me to a whole new world
