A convenient and clean hotel but still a work in progress with potential.
Pros:

It was clean, all the basics were included. There was free wifi that was easy to access. TV picture quality was not too bad. In most hotels its terrible. There was a hair dryer and iron + ironing board. Free WIFI

The majority of the staff were helpful and polite with special references to the guy overseeing breakfast on Friday morning 17/07/26. He ensured the are remained clean and I had all the assistance that I needed.

Cons:

Didn't look much like the photos.

There was not room to swing a cat in the bed room. If two people used it the dynamics of moving round the room would have been akward. It sufficed for solo traveller but I would have liked a bigger, less claustrophobic space.

The toilet seat and lid would not stay up because it was aligned with the curve of the sink. As a male I had to hold it up with my spare hand when urinating.

The bathroom was so compaact that the toilet roll holder was under the sink. Just about within reach for me but anyone with upper mobility restrictions would struggle.

It is no longer called St James, There is a building near by with the hotel name on, round the back of the crow pub. This is empty and dissused. On the opposite side of the stree is Four Points hotel and that is this hotel. Staff explained they are undergoing a name change but not knowing that left me walking around wondering if I had been scammed.

The hotel is being refurbed and booking.com had no mentioned of that. The reception area was mostly being installed/under constructions. When trying to have a paeceful breakfast workmen were banging loudly and using tools building the new reception desk.

The lift had some kind brown glue splashed all over it. Again probably part of the renovation.

There was no hotel bar as advertised on booking.com because it was still under reconstruction.

Under renovation but will be lovely when completed
Pros:

Stayed for 2 nights, we weren’t made aware of the renovation going on but didn’t really spoil our stay. The hotel is in an excellent location near the castle & town centre up a short hill. On arrival the foyer was being decorated so only really saw the reception desk, the bar or restaurant are closed so no food available outside room but there are a few very nice restaurants & bars nearby. My room was a single which was small & compact but easily big enough for one, with bath & shower, it was recently decorated & spotlessly clean, with beverages, toiletries & water provided. The hotel will be lovely when the renovation is complete & I would definitely return if in the area

Pros:

Receptionist was lovely, breakfast was good.

Cons:

Bathroom smelt, room was really hot, cabinets poor. Wasn't told at any stage that since I booked and time of arrival that you had changed your name, I had to phone because I couldn't access st James hotel at the address given. Very poor.

Pros:

The location was good.

Cons:

The Hotel is in the middle of a re-brand and refurb and we were not advised beforehand - including that the signage has been changed to the new name! The breakfast was refunded as they are not offering this at the moment- but we would have preferred to eat at the hotel. Local refuse collection was noisy at 5am that woke us up, and there are construction works nearby using using petrol power tools at 8am. Normally I would have been awake - but after being woken by the bin lorries at 5am I was trying to catch up. I'm sure this place would be great normally but not at the moment.

Pros:

The hotel was in a convenient location, not too far from the train station and in a nice part of town with bars and restaurants nearby.

Cons:

The hotel was under renovation when I was there. The lobby was basically a building site and there were no breakfast or dining facilities. My room was comfortable but small and in need of an update.

Don’t use this hotel …… yet
Pros:

In the midst of a refurbishment which wasn’t explained to the detail required - no reception no bar breakfast in amongst the building site - staff were incredibly apologetic but dreadful stay which I will be following up on

Cons:

Building site accommodation

Comfortable room, stressful parking, nice staff, close to everything
Pros:

Room was comfortable, very good location. Very good cafe for breakfast within easy walk.

Cons:

No breakfast due to ongoing refurbishment. Tried to use their parking facilities. carpark extremely tight, don't bother with this use the Big carpark beside the hotel the difference in price is worth avoiding the stress and potential respray.

Pros:

Great location, nice clean rooms.

Cons:

Unfortunately the lobby was been renovated at the time of the stay so that was bad timing, would have been nice to drink in the hotel
