Amazing Hotel and Spa. The best we have been to in the UK.
The spa was lovely, clean, and relaxing, and dinner in the Walled Garden was consistently excellent. Breakfast in the walled garden on some days was also very enjoyable, with attentive staff. The grounds were beautiful and it seems very dog friendly.
Unfortunately, there were several aspects of our stay that fell short of five-star expectations. Our room was a wheelchair-accessible room, which was not made clear at booking, the toilet was so high my feet couldn't touch the floor (I'm only 5'5").
The room was noisy at night, with staff talking and walking in the corridors, and there was no air conditioning which would be a major issue in summer.
We encountered cleanliness and safety issues, including broken glass on the bathroom floor and blood on the sheets.
Breakfast service was inconsistent, with drinks taking excessively long times to arrive, orders arriving incorrect, toast taking so long to arrive we had already finished the rest of our breakfast.
The spa was lovely, clean, and relaxing. However, we noticed inconsistencies in staff instructions, such as requiring flip flops indoors while other guests walked around in outdoor shoes.
Overall, the service and attention to detail did not match the standard we would expect from a five-star hotel. I wouldn't recommend it or return.
The property is fabulous and we had a lovely arrival on Friday evening. There are plenty of activities to do around the property and the walks are brilliant. The equestrian enclosure was our favorite, being able to see and stroke them was relaxing after breakfast. The SPA / outdoor jacuzzi is also fantastic and we found it quiet over the bank holiday weekend which was a big plus!
The first night dinner in the walled garden was underwhelming and the restaurant service was a all over the place, it seemed like the team couldn't wait to get home as soon as it hit 9pm. The second evening was worse, it seems the staff don't want to make eye contact on purpose and prefer to focus on clearing and setting up the tables for the morning breakfast seating. Additionally, it seemed when being served there was inexperience on what cutlery should be present and we found that we had to go and seek a member of waiting staff to assist us constantly (rarely would a member of the team check in on us and whether we needed anything else, basics such as tea spoons with your coffee / tea, salt & pepper or condiments). The room was very quaint, we had a country room but we couldn't find the 'do not disturb sign', there is no AC but a standing fan in the cupboard which was manageable. We liked the fact we had bottled water but because it was so warm there was no where to chill it. Additionally, considering your spending over £500 per night for a country room there was no type of VIP amenity or welcome amenity other than 3 ginger biscuits which is a bit sub-par considering the cost. The night before we checked out we received a copy of the bill, they charged 5% service charge on the nightly accommodation which was a little insane and 10% on F&B, needless to say we asked for this to be removed. I don't where they got this 5% additional accommodation service charge from, even it was to work if there would need to be a noticeable turn down gift every night, check in from the duty manager regularly and an impactful VIP / Guest amenity but that really was taking the biscuit to charge! Lastly what we didn't realize was the amount of children staying, on the face of booking the hotel gives off a much adult themed vibe but we found the opposite.
