I genuinely do not understand how this hotel has such good online reviews. Our experience at The Renwick was completely unacceptable, especially considering we paid around $350 for one night, which we ended up spending in another hotel and were refused a refund (!).
We arrived in the morning and politely asked whether an early check-in might be possible. The staff told us they would “have to see what was available” and even mentioned they would need to pay extra to the cleaning staff to rush and prepare a room. Meanwhile, we later saw online that other guests had apparently been allowed to check in earlier than the official 4 PM time, so the explanation felt inconsistent and dismissive from the beginning.
When we finally returned around 5 PM, the first room they gave us was shocking. It had an external industrial-style ventilation unit connected through the window with a huge exhaust tube. Because of this setup, the window could not close properly and had visible gaps. Considering that New York is currently rainy, this was ridiculous and made the room feel uncomfortable and poorly insulated.
The room itself was also dirty. The desk had a visible brown ring/stain from what looked like an old cup or drink spill that clearly had not been cleaned properly. The nightstands were bare and looked nothing like the room presentation in the booking photos. Overall, the room felt neglected and completely misrepresented online.
I went back to reception to explain the issue. While they eventually changed our room, there was very little interest or concern about the actual problems I described. No apology, no professionalism, no sense that they cared that a guest paying these prices had just been placed in such a room.
The second room thankfully did not have the external ventilation system, but it was still far from acceptable. The bathroom was tiny and looked nothing like the photos of the room category we had booked.

Unbeatable location for our first trip in New York. Staff were great and very promptly solved an issue with our room.
L’emplacement est top, à 1 rue de la gare central, à 5 min de Bryant Park et 8 min de Time square! Pas mal de restaurants et café autour. Accueil super, le personnel est accueillant et disponible. Le style industriel est vraiment super sympa. Chambre spacieuse, avec un vrai matelas dans le canapé lit, parfait pour mes enfants de 9 et 12ans. Machine à café lavazza disponible dans la chambre et dosette fourni avec des bouteilles d’eau gourde. Bonne insonorisation des chambres et personnel de chambre au petit soin, toujours un mot gentil chaque jour que nous la voyons, et nous demandais toujours ce que nous avions besoin!

The room was spacious, quiet and clean. The location was perfect, near Grand Central and easy to get anywhere in the city: the Bronx, SoHo, and Brooklyn. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
I loved the Agency of Record bar next door. Great design and cocktails too.
There could have been a luggage rack and the mirror structure would have been a good place to incorporate that. Instead the mirror was projecting off the wall and taking up valuable space in the room.
