I am writing to formally dispute the partial refund offered following my recent stay at the Sure Stay Best Western Country Inn in Kansas City and to request a full refund specifically on Room 106.
To be clear: we are not requesting a refund on our entire stay. We are requesting a full refund on Room 106, where the following occurred.
My companion and I checked into Room 106 around 9:00 PM after a full day of travel. Our television was not in working order. We were not offered an alternative room. As we later understood, an electrical storm had disrupted cable boxes on multiple TVs throughout the property, the hotel did not know which rooms were affected, and the property was filling up. The hotel was aware of a widespread outage, had no reliable way to place us in a functional room, and yet continued checking guests in without disclosure. Rather than resolving the situation transparently, staff sent two male maintenance workers to our room repeatedly throughout the evening, with visits continuing close to 10:00 PM.
I want to be clear: we have no complaint about the conduct of those employees. They were polite and doing their jobs. However, my companion and I are two women in our forties. By that hour, we were in our sleeping clothes and in our beds. Having male staff in and out of Room 106 at that time of night, with no resolution in sight and no alternative offered, was genuinely uncomfortable and not a situation two women should be placed in without their explicit consent. At some point, the appropriate response was to acknowledge the problem could not be fixed that night and leave us in peace.
Additionally, and most seriously, marijuana smoke filtered into our room from another guest who was smoking just outside our window, near the corner of Room 106. This was not the hotel's designated smoking area, and we understand that staff was aware this guest was not in the correct location. The situation was not resolved.
Good staff, good selection for breakfast. Good location.
They only had two handicapped parking spaces and employees of the hotel were parked in them.
Property was clean. Well landscaped. Room was nice.
Not much
My room smelled like smoke even though it was non smoking
Communication with the hotel management was excellent throughout my stay. I experienced a personal issue that caused me to arrive one day later than planned, and everything had already been perfectly arranged for my arrival. Whenever I contacted them to make any changes, they responded immediately.
The staff were extremely kind, professional, and helpful at all times. Everything was handled clearly and efficiently, which made the entire experience very comfortable and stress-free. I will certainly return in the future.
The value for money is excellent. The surroundings are wonderful, peaceful, and conveniently close to all the necessary services. In addition, there is plenty of parking space available at the hotel.
Not Much
Awful mattress, lumpy, old. Room smelled terrible (body odor). Pretty worn down place overall.
The room was clean, bed was comfortable. The room was spacious. Staff were friendly and quick to offer to assist when asked. Parking was ample and close to my room and the place was quiet since I didn't have anyone in an adjacent room (I travelled during the middle of the week). The price for two nights was very reasonable (but now I know why).
The first strike against this room is that you are hit with a nauseating acrid smell as soon as you opened the door. I tried airing the room out some but other people staying at the motel (it is a motel, not hotel), were smoking and vaping upwind from my room quite regularly. I don't know if it was the cleaning products making the horrible smell or what, but I kept my clothes in my vehicle because I didn't want to go to my work events smelling like the room. The lobby of the motel smelled even worse. I don't know what was being cooked/burned but it was so gross. Breakfast was just a basic continental (so I just had hard boiled eggs, apples, and a banana). The room was stuffy and dingy (but clean). I cancelled my second visit for next month because I would rather pay an extra $20 a night for a cleaner place that didn't smell so bad. Also, there were other people staying in the motel that may be living(?) there that just seemed, um, sketch. Maybe that isn't kind of me to say but I just didn't like the vibe. Again, the employees were helpful and I'm sure try to do their best with what they have to offer.
Proximity to airport and amenities
The clientele was sketchy and there were too many lights on with all the appliances in there. The smoke detector was very bright and directly over the bed. The bed was worn out and needs to be replaced. When the neighbor got into bed, you could feel it through the wall.
The room was not cleaned well and smelled like someone had smoked in it for days. It was a no-smoking room.
Nothing.
