A beautiful hotel let down by the service
Pros:

The hotel itself is excellent: beautiful, comfortable and very clean. Unfortunately, my overall impression of the stay was seriously affected by the service and by several administrative issues which I would not expect from a Ritz-Carlton.

Cons:

I travel frequently and normally pay for my accommodation, including breakfast, in advance specifically so that check-in and check-out can be as simple as possible. After a flight and a long journey, I simply want to provide my passport, receive the room key and rest.

Unfortunately, check-in was quite the opposite. The receptionist spoke so quietly that we repeatedly had to ask her to speak louder, and the whole process felt unnecessarily long and complicated. The manner of communication also felt rather distant and unwelcoming. For a luxury hotel, I would expect the reception experience to make arriving guests feel looked after rather than inconvenienced.

I was then asked for an EUR 800 deposit. I have no objection to a hotel having a deposit policy, but I believe such a significant pre-authorisation should be made very clear before arrival. Had I known about it in advance, I would have preferred to leave the deposit in cash.

The reason is exactly what happened afterwards. I checked out on 29 August, and as of 10 September the EUR 800 is still not available on my card. I have already had to contact the hotel several times about it. Regardless of whether the delay is technically caused by the hotel, the payment processor or the bank, this is precisely the kind of inconvenience a guest should not have to spend time dealing with after a luxury hotel stay.

There were other issues as well. After I had already checked out, I was charged approximately EUR 28 for water from the room that we had not consumed. To the hotel’s credit, this was corrected promptly after I contacted them. On another occasion, when we came for breakfast, a member of staff initially told us that breakfast was not included, although it had in fact been prepaid. Again, we had to spend time explaining and proving something that should already have been correctly recorded in the hotel’s system.

None of these incidents would be particularly dramatic on their own.
