Beware staying here! Hotel employees will enter your room without knocking, including in the middle of the night.
During my one night stay, I was woken up at about 2:00 AM to the sound of an employee opening my hotel room door, trying to deliver room service that we hadn't ordered. Obviously, being woken up to the sound of a stranger opening the door to your hotel room is extremely startling.
The next morning, after we ordered room service for breakfast, someone again simply entered our room without knocking to try to collect the room service cart. During check out, when I brought up that someone had entered our room in the middle of the night, they simply told me that that attempted room service delivery hadn't been charged to us, and didn't do anything further about it.
We really enjoyed our stay because of the high quality amenities, in room dining experience, and quiet break in the city. The hotel is centrally located but restricted in access to most of the touristy things around it based on big road ways and steep hills that surround it. The lounge was the central food area and service however the staff did not help us much. We had to go to the bartender to get anything ordered. We did enjoy the large green space but it was closed for 2 of the 3 days because of weddings. Pretty unfortunate that info about the green space/terrace being closed for wedding wasn’t sent to us when we checked in. Otherwise enjoy … good relaxing place.
The toilet in my room wasn't cleaned upon check-in and was disgusting. Also, they charged me for the breakfast that was supposed to be complementary (Amex FHR Breakfast Credit). I've called and spoke to 3 different poeple but still not resolved. I'd never go back to this hotel.
Below average, not worth the cost. Some horrible experience for us with staff lying about drink vouchers usage on the call, tech issues, lack of responsiveness from staff - not replying to messages, TV not working properly, dated room and below average food. Would not recommend this place. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and shower was good. The bed was decent too. Overall, a 2/5.
The decor attention to architectural details.. The staff was phenomenal. My concierge Jennifer yes I said my concierge because she insured everything that I wanted for the birthday celebration went off very well and all of the extra things that we wanted to indulge in was met so yes, my concierge Jennifer was phenomenal. The Dogon restaurant from the staff to food, met more than my expectations
Unfortunately the experience was very disappointing, especially given the cost and that this was our babymoon.
There were stains on the bedding upon arrival, repeated issues reaching room service, multiple unfulfilled requests for ice, the toilet stopped working during our stay, and the heated pool was not actually heated. While each issue alone may seem small, together they significantly impacted what we expected to be a relaxing luxury experience.
In our opinion we wouldn’t rate this one as a 5 star hotel hence the 3 star average review. We stayed one night and after much discussion, we moved to another 5 star hotel in the area. We paid for a suite which we found to be very dated and the carpet was kinda stained, we expressed our concerns and were offered another “upgraded suite” that was basically the same if not worse than the original suite we booked. Same concerns only slightly larger than the original one. I believe that some of the rooms are being “reimagined” but the rooms we were offered were not. The parking fee is about double as the other 5 star hotels we looked at as well. We will not book here again as you’re paying for a 5 start hotel with a 3 star room. I want to point out the bell hops and valet parking folks were great and we tipped them accordingly as it’s not their fault the hotel fell short of expectations. Shop around and draw your own conclusions
Location, Room size, cleanliness.
Buffet breakfast. Service charge sometimes automatically added to bill and then asked to pay a further Service charge. More a hotel for conferences/business meetings than a hotel for families/couples.
The Salamander was an exquisite experience. You rarely find customer service like the Salamander any more. The accommodations were beautiful, comfortable and extremely clean. The location is convenient to all of DC. This is the place to be!
I cannot express enough gratitude for the outstanding service provided by Jeremy and Lanetra at the front desk. During my checkout, I experienced a sudden medical emergency. In a moment of panic, they stepped in with incredible professionalism, efficiency, and deep sympathy. In addition when my rooms faucet was broken Jeremy helped me change rooms due to maintance noting it would take a couple of hours. THE SERVICE IS INCREDIBLE. EVERY EMPLOYEE GOES ABOVE & BEYOND.
Great location and friendly staff. Very quiet and comfortable beds! Walking distance to the best museums and Starbucks across the street. 1 block from the Metro, no need to rent a car.
I needed to getaway because I was feeling burned out from work and Salamander truly recharged me. From relaxing in "The Lounge" to dinner at "Dogon," the whole experience felt like a true resort escape. I left feeling refreshed, reset and genuinely happy after my time there.
Not well maintained. Service painful. Food options brought back my depression. Very overpriced for what it is. My favorite part was leaving.
I booked a single night stay at the Salamander while visiting DC for a conference, using my Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts credit. Although I arrived late at night and left early in the morning, the time gave me a luxurious and relaxing break and a good start.
The night clerk was very welcoming and courteous. The room was large, clean, quietly decorated, and had a nice view of the Washington Channel of the Potomac. The tub in the bathroom was large and comfortable, although could have done with a bit more anti-slip surfacing and some bath amenities.
I ordered my free breakfast as room service. It arrived promptly and was delivered by a very friendly waiter. The fruit and basket of pastries were fresh and tasty.
In general, it was a very good stay!
After a long day of travel, I got to the hotel late and left my backpack in a cab. Salamander staff jumped right in - going to security cameras immediately and providing assistance. Got my bag back in the am. Special thanks to Officer Stevenson and David for scouring the footage. They went the extra mile.
