Good but potential to be better
Pros:

Lovely character property in a quiet location. Good buffet breakfast and very friendly attentive staff.

Cons:

The property hasn’t been upgraded for many years and is now looking a little tired . With a refit this hotel could be exceptional.

Cons:

We were disappointed at what appeared a general lack of investment in what is a lovely building.
Firstly the shocking condition of the curtains in the lounge area and rusting metal coffee tables along with some worn soft furnishings. We found several poorly maintained skirting boards along with some sections missing completely. Bathroom was dated and extractor fan not working.
Having walked our dog around the lovely grounds we were disappointed with overflowing waste from all rubbish bins obviously not serviced on a daily basis.
Having stayed at another excellant Mercure hotel in Exeter we felt this hotel was struggling and only held up by wonderful staff.

Lovely hotel, very accommodating. We would book it again if we are in the area.
Pros:

The hotel was easy to find with plenty of parking. Our room was upgraded and was lovely with a superb bed. Ensuite really nice with a powerful shower and lots of little extras such as a sewing kit, comb, toothbrush, shower cap etc. together with a generous helping of toiletries. We had a lovely meal in the evening and the breakfast was well catered for. We had the traditional english breakfast which was very nice and hot as well. Plenty of other choices for breakfast as well.

Cons:

There wasn't anything we didn't like.

Pros:

Really lovely staff team who are very welcoming and helpful. The front of the hotel; reception, bar, lounge and restaurants were lovely and well looked after.

Cons:

Once you got past the reception and went towards the rooms at the back the corridors were grubby and needed a paint and everywhere smelled of stale cigarettes. The bedroom, which was a privilege room, was just tired looking and the bathroom was grubby and outdated.

Lovely wedding with lovely people in a lovely place.
Pros:

We attended a wedding at the hotel so staying overnight was very convenient. Food was great, service good and staff generally friendly and helpful. Lovely grounds, very scenic.

Cons:

Building in general was too hot, and room was hot even with the window open all day and night. No temperature control in room.
A bit disappointing that as we were attending a wedding and had said from the start that we would arrive midday that there was no option to check in early or even a spare room to quickly get changed in other than the toilets.

The bed was very comfy and the view from the room was very good.

Cons:

Whilst the bed was very comfy, we felt the room was somewhat tired. There were scratches on the walls and the toilet did not like to flush. the shower tap needed replacement.

Lovely location, the tree in front of the hotel is magnificent.
Room was comfortable and clean.
Staff were friendly.
Food was very nice.

Cons:

The decor was nice throughout but somewhat tired.
Breakfast was a bit disorganised, no hot water for tea, only from the coffee machine which was very busy.
Hot breakfast choice was good but trays were empty so had to wait 20 minutes until fully restocked.
There was a wedding party present so was very busy at breakfast, so possibly not the normal situation.
