The property itself has character and, architecturally, it is an attractive older hotel with some genuinely elegant features. It clearly has the potential to be a beautiful traditional hotel, although unfortunately much of that charm is undermined by the current standard of maintenance.
Calling this a five-star hotel requires, at the very least, a rather generous interpretation of what “five-star” is supposed to mean.
The building itself has some charm and could potentially be a beautiful traditional hotel. Unfortunately, what we experienced was a tired, poorly maintained property delivering a level of accommodation, service and food that was so far removed from five-star hospitality that, at times, it was almost surreal.
The experience started at arrival. There was nobody at the entrance to welcome guests or assist with luggage and reception appeared seriously understaffed, with one overwhelmed member of staff dealing with several arrivals. Once we had finally checked in, we were actually asked whether we needed help with our luggage or whether we could take it to the room ourselves. Not exactly the arrival experience one associates with a luxury hotel.
We were then enthusiastically told that we had been allocated a “beautiful room”. That description made what followed even more remarkable.
The room was frankly appalling for a property of this supposed category: heavily stained carpeting, chipped and damaged door frames, scratched doors, marked walls, worn and deteriorated fittings, neglected woodwork and an overall appearance that suggested decades without meaningful refurbishment. Some areas also showed staining suggestive of moisture or damp. The photographs probably describe its condition better than any review could.
This was not “classic décor”, “traditional charm” or simply a matter of personal taste. It was poor maintenance.
After complaining, we were moved to another floor where the rooms were noticeably newer and considerably better maintained. Ironically, this only made the original allocation worse: apparently, dramatically different standards of accommodation coexist within the same hotel, yet guests are expected to discover this only after complaining.
Then came breakfast, which deserves a review of its own.
