Sant'Angelo, Matera - Small Luxury Hotels

We had a wonderful stay at this property during our recent trip to Matera. The accommodations were absolutely lovely — our room was spotless and beautifully chic, with thoughtful design touches that made it feel both stylish and comfortable.

The breakfast spread each morning was a real highlight — a delicious array of options that set us up perfectly for a day of exploring the Sassi. And the staff went above and beyond throughout our stay, warm, attentive, and genuinely excellent from check-in to check-out.

Highly recommend for anyone visiting Matera — we’d stay again in a heartbeat.

Staff / cave experience/ brand new facilities

I haven’t even stayed here and im having trouble coordinating with them! Its a 5 star apparently, but they claim no one can get there by car now, I asked if there’s porter service there’s no response exactly how wonder am I going to come to this hotel and my lugging my luggage, their communication is horrible!

It was our first time in Matera, I would advise more than one night to find your feet. Hotel Sant’Angelo was in the perfect location within walking distance to local sites, restaurants, shops & bars. Beautifully placed the rooms are built into the caves so they are dotted around and not in a building as such so really different and unique. We had 2 rooms and both were fabulous with beautiful views. Anyone who may have mobility issues I would recommend ground or lower floors and also same applies for small kids! All of the staff were very friendly and welcoming especially, Martina, Flavia, Nicole & Umberto. Parking is nearby at a small cost and there is a hotel shuttle which is very comfortable and efficient which will collect you from your car with your bags, it is suggested to just bring a small bag but if not concierge will help you. All in all we really enjoyed Matera & our stay at Sant’Angela. Thank you again! 😎

We had the loveliest stay at Sant'angelo. The staff were so responsive, kind and helpful from the very beginning. The service was really exceptional. The rooms and property are very special here, each room is unique and different from each other. It's a very special place. A/C worked well during the recent heat wave and the stay was very comfortable. We were only here one night but I would have loved to stay two and enjoy the property/rooms even more and explore Matera more.

Such a nonpareil experience being in the beautiful historic Sassi of Matera. Love how SantAngelo thoughtfully respects the architecture, each room elegant whilst aligned with nature. It was a treat to stay in a real cave luxuriously, the rooms kitted out with Ortigia products that smell divine; to walk out into open spaces where one can sit at night and watch the many cats hang out by the old city walls.

SantAngelo's breakfast at RegiaCorte is stunning too, I particularly loved the pastries and the selection of cheeses; the dinner service as the sun set was magical, with dishes that elevate the local cuisine. I also loved the pizza at PiuSud, stunningly charred and a flavour experience in one's mouth.

The property is located very conveniently within the lower piazza zone, with plenty of food and sights literally at one's doorstep-- Rupestrian churches, views of the Gravina caves, and gelato. SantAngelo's wonderful warm team also arranged everything thoughtfully-- from porters to carry luggage up the sassi steps, a history of the place, to the ApeCalessino tour. Graziemille per tutti!

From start to finish we had a remarkable experience at Sant’Angelo. It’s the most perfect location for exploring Matera and the rooms, especially the cave rooms are stunning. Not just a stay but an experience. The rooms were spotless and it was a proper oasis. The staff went above and beyond to ensure you have a great experience and nothing is an issue. Breakfast is a great and even better when eating it looking out over Matera in the beautiful restaurant.

I cannot recommend this hotel enough. Just incredible! We stayed for our wedding anniversary and they made it extra special for us.

It’s an experience that will stay with us for a long time. We hope to return in the future as our stay was just perfect!

Review for 5 night stay July 2026

First of all - great you could pre-arrange our transfer from Bari Airport, ~5:45pm direct to hotel - so late in the afternoon.

The service has been terrific from the moment we stepped out of the airport, into your transfer van and then into your hotel.

The reception team have been amazing, and a big thank you to Umberto for explaining Matera to us and providing us with a local map.

** Google and Apple Maps a little bit unreliable, so we are told 😀. Note… emphasis on Apple Maps being EVEN worse than Google Maps! Such wisdom from your crew.

The baggage drop to our room was most helpful. I don’t know how we would have managed to bring our heavy suitcases up the stairs to our beautiful GENUINE cave room - Grotta Panoramica #room 62.

Morning breakfast at the restaurant was exceptionally good. Every day we were greeted with a friendly face, explanation of the wonderful foods on offer and custom made coffee to our liking. On a number of days, we were lucky enough to get a table on the alfresco overlooking the gorge.

Thank you for the unlimited wine buckets with ice delivered to our room. We really appreciated being able to chill our drinks in such warm Italian weather and sit on the outdoor patio overlooking a breathtaking view.

When it finally came time to leave, checking out was a breeze. Again, thank you for organising the bag collection from our room and navigating many stairs with our heavy luggage. Your Porters seem super human in strength!

The day before checkout we were able to pre-organise hotel shuttle to the Matera bus station (Don Luigi Sturzo).

And lastly - we really appreciate your shuttle driver dropping us off at the bus station for our FLIX bus to Bari.

We look forward to another trip to Matera in the future.

Everything just works here. They send you a pre arrival message with map directions for their car park. The transfer vehicle is waiting for you, the staff are all super friendly and all make you feel special. Our room and views were just incredible and the breakfast buffet was delicious

Der Service war sehr freundlich. Ausflüge Restaurantbuchungen und Shuttleservice wurde alles von den netten Angestellten des Hotels gebucht. Die Rezeption und der Frühstückservice waren einfach top! Der Shuttle vom Parkplatz zum Hotel war pünktlich um mich abzuholen. Das Hotelzimmer war einwandfrei. Sauber, großzügig und hatte ein tolles Design. Das Bett war groß und hatte eine angenehme Matraze. Der Ausblick hervorragend. Die Lage des Hotels ist perfekt und nah an allem dran. Das Frühstück war groß und viele frische Lebensmittel. Leckere Burrata, Gemüse, verschiedene Kuchen und andere Leckereien.
