Warm welcome from staff and really lovely evening meal with lots of choice. It is also very close to everything in Galway. I have one major gripe. It is 2026 and the wifi is so so bad. I had business to do and essentially had to wait to get it done in my next hotel. I get it that it is a rather old fashioned hotel but that is no excuse. I literally had to wait to leave this review as the wifi wouldn't connect me to Trip Advisor, let alone upload or download.
We booked this hotel for five nights as we had limited time in Galway on a prior stop (2024) and wanted to return to explore it more.
As noted by others, the hotel is very conveniently located and the rooms are quite comfortable. But rooms and locations don’t take care of guests - people do. Among the very limited positives of our stay, the breakfast restaurant staff were quite accommodating and the food quite good. This might seem trivial, but when we checked in we were informed that large groups present were likely to overwhelm the kitchen, to the point that we were actually advised to delay breakfast until after the groups’ scheduled time was past. Unfortunately, we too, were tourists and had a schedule. Sorry Rick Steves groups. As it turns out, this warning was much ado about nothing. The kitchen and the dining staff handled it all professionally.
We only had one experience with the bar staff, for reasons that will become clear, but they were jovial and quite engaging. Wished we could have spent more time with them.
And there begins the saga of the nadir to our entire Galway experience. Following a very long day touring the Aran Islands we returned to find our room had not been serviced by housekeeping. Stuff happens, so we informed the front desk that we were missed, they apologized and sent someone to attend to it. We decided to get a drink at the bar to give them their space and had the enjoyable experience noted. But, as we were tired, we decided to call it a night after one drink, asking to just have the cost added to our room charge. (We learned later that) this hotel charges your full room on checkin and expects you to pay as you go for all other charges. Not knowing that at the time, the bartender instructed us to set up charging privileges with the front desk. Except that’s not what the front desk informed us; quite the contrary. I was actually told that a bar manager had to “vouch for me” to establish bar charge privileges. Noting that the hotel had already successfully charged my card for 5 nights accommodations at rack rate I, I gather foolishly, asked if my card wasn’t “vouch enough”. A quite stern “no” came back as the response. Still not knowing what “vouch for me” meant, I added my own interpretation - this hotel would not get 1 euro more revenue from me, a promise kept!
But there’s more. I did inform management of this, and was told the desk’s response was “not their policy” and that things were corrected to allow room charge for this stay and all future stays (of which, of course, there will be none) as that damage was done.
The next day we decided to see if our room would be serviced (this, according to the manager was also an egregious oversight from the prior day). About 2:30 pm staff arrived. We left them to their work to head to a nearby pub (it is Ireland) and were gone about 2 hours. Upon our return we discovered that housekeeping, trying to clean our bathtub (which we had not used) left the water running with the drain closed. Yes, the tub was completely filled with water. Thankfully, the safety drain was working and no damage to either party’s property resulted. Had to have hotel maintenance visit as we had no idea how the drain was supposed to work and didn’t want to accidentally release a tsunami of water as we were on the top floor.
Yes, there is more, including another missed housekeeping, but I will spare any of you still reading. I went this far only because the manager’s response included corporate “we pay attention to details” language that likely sounds nice to senior managers but rings hollow to customers who went through all of this in 5 days.
So, to those of you who might question review rankings, you have our story. Every event and response is what we actually experienced. You decide if this “four star hotel” is what it says it is. We don’t think it id because “we pay attention to details”.
Had a family celebration in the Hotel at the weekend and just wanted to say well done on the whole experience. From providing personalised menus, decorating the room and service during the meal was second to none. The choice on the menu was extensive and great value Well done to everyone involved
.
Nice folks that greet you. Its a pretty busy hotel but the location is superb. The rooms are ok, nothing super great. The bellman was fantastic parking our car. Overall a pretty good hotel with really great Irish breakfast in the morning with very good staff for that.
Breakfast was good
I thought the tub was a bit high for seniors to be getting in & out of- I noticed there were a lot of seniors arriving by bus and I thought it might be difficult for them. The room was a bit dark. However I thought the room had a spacious feel and found it to be one of the bigger rooms in Ireland during our travels which I appreciated.
Wonderful hotel with lots of spaces to relax in lobby. Jasmine at the front desk was so helpful in giving us recommendations.
Liked everything
For some reason, Galway hotels seem to get a lot of bad reviews. We stayed one night here, and we had a very nice stay. This is a stately hotel that is nicely located in central Galway, yet is just a few blocks from all the pubs and noisy streets. The city is compact, easily walkable. Our room was large, well-laid out, and comfortable. WiFi worked fine, we found free parking in the hotel lot. Staff were very helpful and friendly, nice breakfast. This is not the place to party down, mostly tours and over 60 folks like us. Overall, I would recommend as a nice base to explore the city.
Staff were friendly, relatively clean facilities.
Run down, stained worn down carpets and furniture. Cigarette smoke from parking lot enters main lobby, generally had a weird smell throughout building. Shower was very narrow and shower head low. Bed was very springy and hard.
Lovely comfortable hotel with friendly staff
The size of the hotel rooms and location
The front desk staff was not great, the hotel was really old and needs to be updated a bit.
Received such a warm Irish welcome by the front desk! How lovely to have coffee & a treat after our journey! Our room was so clean, & nicely decorated. We enjoyed the full Irish breakfast & again had wonderful staff serving us. Classy hotel in a good location. We enjoyed walking to the restaurants & pubs. Highly recommend!
Wow, amazing hotel, staff were 100%, long time since I’ve been that impressed, take a bow, well done, reception, restaurant, bar and breakfast, they crossed the line on service.
In fairness It was an expensive one night for 2 adults and a challenging teenager but could not fault it. We will definitely stay here again.
We arrived at 10am (4pm check-in) but they got our bags stowed and then had our room ready at 11am whilst we wandered around the city. Bags were in our room when we got back, like in an old high class hotel movie.
I have never written a review this long.
100%, great staff and service, the extra mile was appreciated.
I saw the reviews before we stayed and after staying they are well deserved and the staff who make this experience should take a pat on the back for that.
We wanted to stay one more night even though we didn’t have reason to but no availability 🙂↕️
The location was perfect. Walking distance to anything you want to see. The decoration and appointments were great. The bar was fabulous. Great service. Just do the valet parking with the Hotel, it’s so convenient. The Head Porter, Fergo was incredibly hospitable.
Towel warmers were on a timer, whose schedule I ran out of time to discern ( a real first world problem if I’ve ver heard of one!).
Large hotel probably great for tours. Nice staff. Good location. In need of a refresh and feels old and tired. Book a deluxe room if you want a nicer updated room
