FOOD FANTASTIC APART FROM STANDARD SIZE HADDOCK ( kiddies portions ) My opinion.
Pros:

We have been staying at The Higher Trapp for on & off for over 10 years and the welcome we get is second to none, this time we were greeted on reception by Ash who was so informative, helpful & could not do enough to ensure we had everything we needed, thanks Ash. We ate in Fitzy's Restaurant for both our evening meals & breakfasts over our 4 night stay the food was very nice the only comment I can make is on the Haddock I thought it was of child like portions with 12 chips added and a spoonful of mushy peas, I did send a picture back to the Chef who came back with it is a standard size portion. This is the second time I have had to send a comment back about the fish size it is a good job I had bread & butter to fill me or I would have left hungary. The waiting staff at both breakfast and dinner were outstanding, thanks to Joe, Dillon, Toby, Mia, Claire, Alex & a big thank you to Chris for Sunday nights meal it was outstanding & Cook for a couple of very nice breakfasts.
We hope to see you all again but not for a fish dinner. Ken & Marie Room 20.

Convenient place for me to stay. Needs TLC.
Pros:

Hotel is in a beautiful setting. The bathroom had had a recent makeover which was good.
Restaurant waiting staff were excellent. The house has a lot of potential (which is not being used).

Cons:

My room was cramped & the mattress uncomfortable. My room was NOT serviced on the Sunday which is bad.
Breakfast was standard. It would help if there was a "cheaper" option. I am not a big eater and £12.99 for 2 pieces of toast and a cup of tea is expensive. The croissants were tough. Fresher produce - not sure how "local" everything was. The emphasis on being a wedding venue (2 weddings in the 3 days I was there) made me feel like an intruder. It was not wise to put my room right above the disco that played loudly until 11.30pm either. The hotel corridors and glass need better cleaning. Things were dusty and smeared. The empty shelves in furniture that lined the corridors could be filled with second hand books etc. The pictures on the wall should be of local scenes (which can be bought inexpensively). And whilst I appreciate and am very used to the friendliness of Northerners (I have been coming to the area for 45 years) I was a bit surprised to be addressed as "love" and "darling" by the reception staff.

Disappointing visit
Pros:

Arrived a bit early and no one on reception. Hunted around and found someone multi tasking serving behind the bar. When someone eventually turned up we were greeted enthusiastically and allowed to check in our room early. The room was spacious and comfortable but to say was tired would be an understatement. Carpets dirty, paint work also dirty and stripping off, bathroom grubby with limited towels and toilet paper, all in all disappointing. However on a plus point on turning right from reception the lounge area, bar and restaurant were more presentable although the tables were clearly never moved when hovering as crumbs etc on the floor.
On an all inclusive deal which have pluses and negatives. The food and service both at dinner and breakfast was first class but the drinks menu was very restrictive with a local clause that all sprits have to include a mixer which was frustrating although you could have as much as you wanted. As my wife was struggling with the stairs and our overall disappointment we left a day early but must thank Claire on reception for sorting out a credit for the all inclusive part. Needles to say we won’t be returning and suggest that the family look to spruce the place up a bit to attract other than locals who clearly only go there only for the all inclusive package.

Disgusting rooms health hazzard
Pros:

Just got back from this hotel absolutely disgusting we stayed in the lodge as they call it room 31 as we had difficult with stairs I have stayed in many hotels and this one was absolutely disgusting we went to meet up with are friends for her birthday what a let down her hubby ask if they could make it special for her nothing as they had a wedding on our room stank off mould and damp and when we lifted the door blind it was covered in damp and mould health hazard or what the room was filthy the carpet was stained with what looked like blood and the room was covered in dog hairs and so very dated spiders webs everywhere we went to speak to reception and showed them the photos off the room and they were shocked we paid for the all inclusive package just short off 300 pound the restraunt and bar were we ate and had a drink was very noisy the meal was good the first night the second night portion size was cut down and wasnt as good as night before they had people who just walked in and they were very loud you couldn't hear yourself speak they moved are room into hotel which was a nice room but so hot as water pipe runs through it they gave us a pathetic £50 as an apology and said the in an email that the room was unacceptable we definatly would not go again they obviously do a good wedding package but dont care about there other guest or the cleaners off there rooms or the guest as my partner suffers from copd he has not stopped coughing and wheezing since he got back as damp and mould does not his chest any good

Fawlty Towers
Pros:

Met up with friends for a two night stay 16/17 August 2026. After requesting not to be put in a lodge, we were put in a lodge. Having previous stayed in one we knew how noisy these could be at night, and this time was no different, horrendous, doors slamming, people shouting into the early hours. The tiles in the bathroom on the floor were cracked, leading to a cut on big toe. The mattress was like something I had never slept on - seemed to have a bar across the middle which was awful - very bruised leg now, I cannot believe they were not aware of this. There are no phones in the rooms for us to let reception know and once in nightwear it is not appealing to have to walk up approximately 100y outside to reception in the rain to inform them. That was night one - no sleep whatsoever. Night two we managed to be transferred to the main hotel accommodation, and although better was very warm/hot so very uncomfortable in the night, this was due to hot water pipes. Opened the window as far as we could (a few inches) and this was absolutely filthy (tried to upload a photo but having difficulty on here, although did send to the hotel). There had been a wedding when we arrived, and the carpet was not cleared of the debris from this in the corridors during our stay. The food on the first night was nice, but ordering exactly the same on the second night the portions were half the size! A gentleman on the table next to us had his drink knocked all over him by a waitress, and then the table behind had the same thing happen by another waitress, by now we thought we had inadvertently booked a 'Fawlty Towers' weekend, at least then it would have been funny. The hotel have awarded us £50 as a goodwill gesture, but considering the two nights cost us just short of £300 and we got no sleep whatsoever on night one and very little on night two I think this is a bit of an insult. Oh, and I had emailed ahead to inform the hotel it was my wife's birthday so a little gesture would have been nice, but although they replied to the email and said they would make a note, they did absolutely nothing, I have never known a hotel completely dismiss requests, etc., as this one did. All in all, I think this hotel focuses on weddings and regulars, we did hear a few people complaining, in fact we had to wait at reception to complain whilst the people in front finished their complaint. For the money we had paid for this stay, what we received was very very below par, we at least expect to be able to sleep when in a hotel, but this was definitely not the case on night one of our stay, and very limited on night two.

What a shame
Pros:

Cheap deals bringing in locals just to drink and be loud and dirty mouthed all the time. People going to view for future weddings walked out and so did we. Pull your selves together head office. The area doesn't need this type of clientele.
