I recently stayed at the Pousada Forte da Horta, and to say it was a disappointment would be a massive understatement. What should have been a historic and relaxing stay felt more like a dodgy, unsettling nightmare.
By far the most alarming part of the stay was the room's setup. There were bizarre electrical components positioned directly facing the bathtub. They served absolutely no logical purpose, had no apparent function, and left me with a deeply unsettling feeling that they could easily be hiding a pinhole camera. The entire stay felt like a massive invasion of privacy, and I couldn't relax for a single second in my own room. Because of this, I felt forced to drape towels and other items over these strange fixtures just to protect my family's basic privacy.
The unprofessionalism didn't stop there. One morning, I walked outside and saw one of the hotel's breakfast staff members sitting on the bench right in front of the hotel, openly watching pornography on their phone. It was incredibly trashy, highly unprofessional, and set a terrible tone for the entire establishment.
As for the property itself, everything felt incredibly old, neglected, and dodgy. The outdoor pool was unusable—completely filthy and covered in pigeon droppings. It was clear that basic maintenance is entirely ignored here.
The single saving grace of this hotel was the cleaning staff. The cleaning ladies were genuinely friendly, polite, and did their best with what they had. Unfortunately, their warmth couldn't make up for what was otherwise a deeply uncomfortable, stressful, and poorly run experience. I would strongly advise anyone looking for peace of mind and basic hygiene to steer clear of this place.

Great range of choices for breakfast with helpful friendly service.

Room quality is very bad. Service is mixed. 50% excellent, 50% completely unacceptable. Breakfast is actually ok, probably the best part of the stay. We had to cut our stay short - instead of 3 nights stayed just 1 night.

The restaurant is worthwhile a visit. Its menu contains Azore specials. The food is well prepared.
Great are the fish soup, catch of the day, Azore wine choice and the gin menu card.

The flammed ananas …. GREAT you can awake me in the middle of the night for another serving!

Hotel is very pleasant with rooms overlooking the harbour. Room was spacious and clean. Pool was very pleasant and not busy while we were there. Breakfast was adequate but cannot comment on lunch or dinner as we ate elsewhere. Central for activities. Unfortunately there was a 4 day festival next door that kept going until 1-2am but noise levels were acceptable

All the staff members were marvelous!

Die Lage dieses Hotels ist gut am Hafen und der Promenade - der Blick auf den Pico - wenn nicht in Wolken gehüllt - sehr schön. In den oberen Zimmern wäre es wohl noch schöner.

We stayed for 9 days as part of a whale watching trip with Whale watching Azores. From Rui at check in to Fernando at breakfast, to the housekeeping staff - a massive thank you and appreciation for your hard work. We had a wonderful stay. Our room was big and overlooked the harbour and Pico. Breakfast was really good quality and excellent service. When we checked in , we requested a kettle for the room and Rui immediately brought one with cups and saucers. Water is provided daily and the fridge is lovely and cold. We enjoyed a small white port every evening on our balcony before dinner. Well done everyone for a great experience in a lovely building in a gorgeous place

Today I had breakfast at Pousada de Santa Cruz in Horta and the experience was excellent.
Besides the spectacular views and the unique atmosphere inside the fort, the staff were very friendly and professional. The breakfast was very well prepared, with a great variety of options, excellent quality, and a strong focus on regional products, which really makes a difference.
It is a very special and beautiful place with an amazing setting. Definitely an experience worth repeating.
