We stayed in a Royal Suite Front King. I paid GBP 203 / USD 267 per night, including breakfast.
A grand, luxury hotel in the old style. An old building beautifully renovated and restored, in a great location with outstanding service. Highly recommended, I doubt there is a better place to stay when visiting Quito. Just beware of the local pick-pockets.
The “Good”:
- Very large, spacious rooms - magnificently and comfortably furnished.
- Spotlessly clean
- Super king sized bed with great quality bed linens and such excellent pillows.
- Excellent location: you are in the heart of historic Quito and within easy walking distance of the major downtown sites; there is so much to see and do close by; and there are many great restaurants to choose from.
- Impeccable full service: responsive, friendly and the highest professional standards.
Beware:
- The over spa-bath shower is difficult to access, and whilst there is plenty of hot water it is difficult to adjust to a comfortable temperature.
- Petty crime is an unfortunate epidemic in many modern cities, put particularly so in Quito. Take sensible precautions to protect your valuables.
the breakfast was superb steak and shrimp omelette with local fruits coffee was the best i have ever tasted the view over independence square was great
all was good
Extremely good service and comfortable clean rooms, but the food wasn't brilliant. The staff went above and beyond to support us during the stay, especially as we had a lot of bags. Central location in the old town.
Excellent accommodations and excellent staff.
The Hotel Plaza Grande was an unforgettable stay. The atmosphere is dazzling and the service is even better. Although visitors can stress about the city’s safety, the hotel is placed in one of the safest parts of town. Not to mention, the breakfast is out of this world!
The location is excellent, the hotel is situated directly on Independence Square in the heart of Quito’s historic centre. It’s a stunning colonial building and our large room was really comfortable with everything possible provided and a view of the square that you’d never get tired of looking at. I loved the heavy wooden door to get into our room.
The staff were all outstanding, really exceptional and went above and beyond the call of duty. They were charming, helpful and courteous and each time you went back to the hotel they made you feel welcome. It was clear that they all wanted your stay to be perfect. On the day we had a really early start for a trip to Cuenca they offered to prepare us a breakfast box without us having to ask and even had coffee available. It’s things like that that make a stay special.
We had a wonderful time in Quito and highly recommend the hotel.
It was terrible, they send a note for a party that was going to be in the hotel, I change rooms and the smell!! It was awful, they put me in a room so small that it wasn’t what I paid for, I went to the reception and they said that wasn’t an emergency for them, they didn’t care at all!
Centrally located in old town. Beautiful building
We stayed one night at Plaza Grande on our way to the Galapagos for our honeymoon. Despite this being a 1 night stay the hotel treated us so well and made sure our honeymoon was memorable and celebrated. The room was beautiful, and then left us a very nice letter and treats. All of the staff were exceptionally kind and helpful. We are vegetarian and they made us special breakfast boxes for the morning travels. Luis Alberto was at the front desk and made sure to make us feel comfortable and taken care of.
Un hotel sin duda excelente lo que más me gustó es la calidez de atención de parte de todo el Hotel.
Breakfast was outstanding with multiple choices including traditional Ecuadorian treats. Rooms were large, comfortable and very well appointed.
My husband and I are fairly well-traveled, and I can say without hesitation that our stay at the Plaza Grande was one of the finest hospitality experiences we've ever had.
The hotel itself is beautiful: our Royal Front King on the third floor was spacious and elegant, the location on Plaza Grande puts you steps from everything worth seeing in the Historic Centre, and the restaurants and breakfast were excellent. But what makes this place truly wonderful is the staff.
We arrived from the airport at 1:30 AM after a long travel day, and the welcome we received set the tone for the entire stay. Luis, the night manager, went well beyond what you'd expect. He took real time to give us thoughtful, personal recommendations for restaurants and the neighborhood — many of which we followed and loved. When my husband had a pre-dawn pickup for a Cotopaxi excursion, Luis quietly made sure he had breakfast waiting and a packed sandwich for the road. That kind of anticipatory care is rare.
Mauricio was equally remarkable. When I came down with a stomach bug I'd picked up outside the hotel, he called personally that morning to check on me and sent up fresh fruit, croissants, and aromatic tea. It was the kind of genuine, personal kindness we've honestly rarely experienced at a hotel.
The staff also marked my husband's birthday with wine, cake, and cookies — a thoughtful surprise we hadn't asked for or expected.
The housekeeping team was consistently meticulous and warm. From arrival to departure, every member of staff treated us as if we were the only guests in the hotel.
We will be back, and we'll be telling everyone we know. If you're considering the Plaza Grande, stop considering. Book it.
Located on Plaza Grande, this historic hotel is hard to beat for centrality in Quito’s old town. With only a relatively small number of rooms, breakfast is à la carte rather than buffet-style, which may be understandable, but I found the menu quite disappointing. Almost every option was built around meat, while the few non-meat possibilities seemed to exist more by omission than design. It was not even possible to order a vegetable omelette, or something simple with mushrooms, and the fruit selection was underwhelming—especially after I had just spent nearly a week at a considerably nicer and more accommodating hotel elsewhere in Quito. That said, the hotel does offer some luxury touches, including a jacuzzi in the bathroom and a complimentary bottle of Ecuadorian wine on arrival.
There are hotels that provide accommodation, and then there are hotels that create unforgettable experiences. Grand Plaza Quito belongs to the second category.
During my 7-day stay in Ecuador, I returned to this hotel three separate times. In fact, I wanted to spend another night here before my final departure, but unfortunately they were fully booked, so I had to stay elsewhere nearby. That alone says everything about how much I loved this place.
Every single member of the team made me feel genuinely welcome. They arranged an early check-in at 10:00 AM after a long journey and even upgraded my room as a thoughtful gesture because they couldn't accommodate me the previous night. That level of care is incredibly rare.
Their concierge service was simply outstanding. They collected my luggage, arranged comfortable and professional airport transfers, and even when my private guide was waiting just 20 meters from the hotel, they still sent a concierge to personally walk me over. These are the small details that transform excellent service into exceptional hospitality.
On my departure day, I left very early and couldn't make breakfast. Without me even asking, they prepared a beautiful breakfast box for me to take to the airport. Once again, they thought of everything before I did.
I have stayed in many hotels across Europe and around the world, from boutique properties to luxury hotels, and I can honestly say that Grand Plaza Quito delivered the finest hospitality I have ever experienced.
If I could give this hotel a score, it wouldn't be 10 out of 10.
It would be 100 out of 10.
Thank you for making my stay in Quito truly unforgettable. I cannot wait to return.
Hotel Plaza Grande was a beautiful boutique hotel in the perfect location, steps from the Presidential Palace and at the heart of the Colonial downtown. The staff was super friendly and the room was well-appointed, with every detail meticulously curated. Their attention to detail surpassed our expectations! We could not have asked for a better stay for our family.
