What I liked
The location is definitely one of the hotel’s strongest points. It’s in a lovely setting with a nice stoney beach and a really pleasant pool area. We enjoyed spending time around both, and the outside areas give the hotel a lot of potential.
There were also some genuinely excellent members of staff. The reception team and Spa team were consistently friendly, welcoming and helpful, and the room cleaning team were great throughout our stay. We also met some lovely members of the bar team and some of the breakfast waiting staff who were warm, attentive and a real credit to the hotel.
Overall, it isn't a bad hotel. We still enjoyed aspects of our stay, particularly the location and outdoor areas.
What I didn't like
For me, this feels like a glorified 4-star hotel rather than the premium experience it is trying to portray.
The rooms are probably the biggest disappointment. Ours felt very worn and in need of refurbishment, with visible damage and things actually coming away from the walls. We also had lots of ants in the room and there was a strange smell, which isn't something you expect from a hotel positioning itself at this level.
The hotel also feels very disjointed operationally. There doesn't seem to be enough synergy between the different areas, particularly with the food and beverage offering throughout the day. The various bars and spaces can feel like separate operations rather than parts of one resort. The pool bar was particularly noticeable in this respect. For a resort hotel, the food, drinks and service should flow naturally throughout the day, but here it often felt fragmented and we had to do a lot of self service..
Staff service was also very inconsistent. Some members of staff were fantastic, but unfortunately others could be quite rude or appear uninterested. When you're staying at a hotel at this price point, that level of inconsistency really stands out.
Overall, there is a lot to like about Valamar, particularly its location, beach, pool and some genuinely lovely staff. However, the tired rooms, inconsistent service and disjointed operation prevent it from delivering the premium experience we expected.
With investment in the rooms and a more joined-up approach to service and food and beverage, this could be a very good hotel. At the moment, though, it falls short of that
