We were headed from Normandy to Amsterdam and decided to stop for a couple of nights in Bruges. Hotel Van Cleef is where we decided to stay, and it was an excellent choice.
The stay opened with a terrific tour of the place by Benjamin, who was a great host. He and the rest of the staff were unfailingly kind, hospitable and attentive--and the same was true of the owners, who were always on site and terrifically warm and helpful at every turn.
The outdoor space overlooking the canal is really a perfect spot for breakfast (which by the way opened with a lovely assortment of breads, pastries, cheeses, meats and fruit--topped off my whatever we ordered from the kitchen, such as waffles, omelets, really anything you could imagine--ALL OF IT DELICIOUS). Not great for the waistline, but excellent in all other respects. The bar is super cool--a very stylishly appointed spot for an evening cocktail (or several). There is a really nice, elegantly decorated salon-type space on the ground floor that we didn't ever use, but others were certainly enjoying it.
Our room was very comfortable (and I might add, very well air-conditioned, which mattered since we were there at peak summer heat dome/heatwave).
Really we just loved the place--it was a real highlight of our trip. I'd recommend it very highly to anyone.
What a beautiful hotel!
Situated right on the canal in Bruges, the entry point looks unspectacular, but once you’re inside, prepare to be wowed!
You find yourself in a luxuriously grand boutique entrance hall and are immediately welcomed by smiling staff - Benjamin & Suni were excellent! - no air of pretension here!
We enjoyed a junior suite canal view. The room had a luxurious feel but do take care of the low diagonal beams - which I banged my head on (and I’m not even tall)
There’s a mezzanine level with sofa but in reality it didn’t get much use.
The canal view is lovely but you have to stand right up in the dormer window to see it (don’t be thinking you’ll be able sit in the room and watch the world go by from the bed/chair)
That said, it really doesn’t matter. The hotel has a beautiful flower-adorned terrace, right on the canal side, and it’s exclusively for the use of hotel guests. It’s really nice to relax there vs the hotel room (however lovely it is)
There’s also an incredibly welcoming indoor lounge but, with the weather being so good outside, we didn’t find a need to use it. I can imagine it would be so snug and cozy through the winter months though!
Breakfast is plentiful and delicious. Continental includes fresh fruit, cold cuts, cheeses and array of breads and pastries. Sweet and savoury hot options are available from the à la carte menu.
Lunch and dinner is not offered at the hotel but this really isn’t an issue. There’s an abundance of wonderful restaurants within strolling distance and it’s a good opportunity to explore the area.
There are so many positives about Hotel Van Cleef but one thing that really stands out is the experience and dedication of the staff. The very lovely Frederik owns the hotel with his wife (not sure we met her) and together, along with their team, they have built a very classy establishment with a very welcoming environment. Everyone does everything, so to speak (don’t be surprised to see the barman making up your room!) and it has a real family feel.
All said and done, everything about Hotel Van Cleef exudes charm and elegance. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
Thank you to Frederik and the team for your excellent service and communication throughout - we thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
This hotel is fine. The interior design is a little strange. Breakfast was very average and the coffee was terrible. I would not stay here again.
Tudo perfeito.
Love everything about this hotel. So tastefully done. Every corner is just so pretty & nicely done. Very clean and staff is extremely polite & professional. Unlike other European hotels here luxury truly means luxury. And honestly the staff didn’t make any faces for extra water & extra towels or asking for things that hotels are supposed to provide you. And yes the moment we entered the staff said we will bring the luggage to your room & that was really a breather when most other 4* hotels in Europe would literally tell you to carry your own luggage 😃.
Beautiful amenities, great service at a reasonable price. Thank you.
The breakfast was very good and beautifully presented
Service was excellent and staff were friendly
There was nothing to dislike

It was an unforgettable experience! Many thanks to Frederik and Arnaud for their hospitality and for making us feel so welcome. We arrived at 1 a.m., and they greeted us warmly and immediately showed us to our room. The hotel is wonderful, very cozy, and offers excellent breakfasts. The location could not be better. Thank you very much for your attention, kindness, and hospitality. We will definitely be back!
Hotel Van Cleef is honestly amazing. The location is perfect—close enough to walk everywhere in Bruges but tucked away just enough to feel quiet and private.
The hotel itself is beautiful. The rooms were comfortable and much larger than we expected for a boutique property in Europe. We especially enjoyed sitting by the canal in the evening with a glass of wine.
What really stood out was the staff. Everyone was super friendly and seemed to care that guests were having a great time. They offered restaurant recommendations that ended up being some of our favorite meals of the trip and helped make the entire experience feel personal. We ate at Orfea!
Breakfast was excellent! Sunny was awesome.
We've stayed in many luxury and boutique hotels over the years, and Hotel Van Cleef manages to be elegant, comfortable, and welcoming all at the same time. If you're visiting Bruges and want something special without the crowds of a large hotel, this is an easy recommendation. We would absolutely stay here again.
A wonderful, wonderful hotel with wonderful, wonderful staff! For those who can afford it: A must!
It is rare to stay in a hotel with such exquisite decor!
Highly recommend! Such a wonderful boutique property. Beautiful, comfortable, quiet rooms. Very attentive staff. Delicious breakfast. The perfect location in Bruges with its own private outdoor terrace. By far our favorite stay during our 3 week stay in Europe. 5 stars all around. We hope to stay again in the future.
This beautiful and centrally located hotel on the canal is a fantastic place. The staff is incredibly helpful and makes you feel right at home.
Unique design, great breakfast and very well managed and warm hospitality
Nothing
There are a handful of places you stay in the world that really stay with you, with regular reminders of the details and the experience. Hotel Van Cleef in Bruges (Brugge), Belgium is one of those.
Bruges is a charming little city in the Flanders region, established as a port city in what is now northwest Belgium around 1000 AD. There is a rich history in Bruges, as it was once one of the largest ports on the coast. The city benefited from trade, the town prospered, and it developed a characteristic medieval architecture. Bruges is known as the “Venice of the North,” and I can see why – everywhere you look is a symphony of delights for the eyes.
The street view of the hotel is quite subtle, set behind a gate on a residential street. But step inside the large double glass doors and a richly furnished and decorated interior awaits. The hotel backs onto one of the many canals Bruges is known for. Guests are quickly greeted in the intimate space by a charming staff. The entire team is friendly and eager to fill you in on sights, reservations, excursions, food, or any other need to make your stay more comfortable. The lobby is densely decorated with art, furnishings, varying textures of materials, books, and decorations. Everywhere you look there is something capturing your attention, very much in keeping with the character of the city.
We fortunately booked (what we were told is) the nicest of their dozen-and-a-half rooms, #3, the Anna von Bourgogne suite. It’s a large junior suite on the second floor with an overstuffed and comfortable seating area separate from the sleeping area. Massive floor-to-ceiling windows grace this corner room, with canal views along the longer wall. The room features 12-foot ceilings, comfortable furniture, ample closet space, a nicely appointed bathroom, and a very (very) large king-size bed.
There are various comfortable public spaces off the hotel lobby: a salon, cocktail lounge, canal-side patio, dining room, and a boutique.
The included breakfast was a feast: bread and pastries, charcuterie, coffees, and juices to start, followed by eggs any way you like or a classic light and crispy Belgian waffle. All the flavors are refined and excellent.
Bruges is a very walkable city, maybe a mile across, with plenty of cobblestone charm and small alleys to explore. Canals ring the old city, where you can find drawbridges and windmills. The city interior is a feast of history, with the main square clock tower and government buildings anchoring the central district. The central square is ringed with many restaurants with outside tables to enjoy people-watching and the occasional horse-drawn carriage. The main attraction to me was the incredible brickwork architecture, many buildings dating back centuries, and all of them just a short walk from the Hotel Van Cleef.
The hotel, the staff, and the city get the highest marks for a delightful experience in all aspects. Our three-night stay was charming, and the hotel really anchored the experience in a very positive way.
Magnifique , accueillant et chaleureux ! Très familial ! Vraiment splendide
Tout était parfait !
