As poor as I was expecting. Unless something changes drastically, it will be going bust.
Pros:

The room was spacious and the two staff were friendly and helpful. Sadly, those are the only positives.

Cons:

Terrible, terrible value for money. If it were dirt cheap I could have excused the really dated and dilapidated decor in the public spaces, the cheap mattresses, the ancient en suite bathroom, the very basic food in the restaurant and the fact that the bar seems to have lost its license and therefore cannot serve alcohol. But they were charging significantly more than very, very much better hotels. I was expecting all of this, but it was high season and everywhere else was fully booked for the night in question. And one of the external fire doors seemed to be permanently propped open which obviously breaks fire regulations but also gives unrestricted public access to the accommodation levels of the building.

Could be fantastic with some improvements.
Pros:

The hotel is in an excellent location with great breakfast. Erisa really made our morning. Really friendly and helpful. All staff really nice and friendly. Clean bedlinen and towels. Spacious room. The location is superb, you leave the ferry and 2 min walk you are in. If the place was refurbished would be stunning.

Cons:

Very dated deco. Wallpaper that needs replacing. Or maybe paint over it? Bedframes and mattreses painful we assuned gone from the age. Bedside lamps could be replaced? Because we travel with a pet we always get rooms that are not the best. On this occasion it was interesting to see our dog either staying on the sofa or chair or bed, avoiding the floor. Have not seen this behaviour before. On another note there is no lift but you are visiting an old abode so this is to be expected. I think the friendly staff are the heart and soul of this place.

Taugt als Filmkulisse
Pros:

Excellent stay for our 3 days with dogs. Stayed with breakfast and had evening meal twice as well.
Pros:

Very good fresh cooked breakfast. It wasn't on the hot self servers which there may be if there were more guests.
Room location was easy access from the car park at the rear of the hotel at the same level.
Large twin room with just about a view to the harbour and ferries through the trees.
No restrictions on bringing dogs to the restaurant.
Quick responses to all messages before arrival and manned reception until midnight when we arrived at 11.45pm

Cons:

Room was a bit tired but wasn't in a bad state.
No lift from the main entrance to the first floor reception or the rooms on the second floor (not a problem from the car park which is at floor 2 level to the rear).
Lots of negative reviews in the press which put me off but the hotel was way better than this.

An old and seemingly tired hotel with poor facilities. Over priced.
Pros:

Location was fine and staff were very friendly and helpful.

Cons:

General decoration was old and not well kept. Windows rattled with wind overnight. Breakfast was adequate but bread, croissants and continental breakfast meats/cheese were not fresh. Cooked breakfast delivered before cereals were consumed. Soup spoons only for consumption of cereals. General lack of meal service etiquette.
A shame because the staff were most helpful - they just don't know how to deliver the service. They need training.
148 steps from street pavement to allocated bedroom on third floor. Sadly no working lift.

Any port in a storm
Pros:

We booked this hotel last minute as we were due to stay on a campsite with storm Dave approaching. The hotel was clearly in the process of opening for the season but the staff were very friendly and allowed us access to the room early which was very much appreciated as our daughter had not faired well on a rough crossing. We were given one of the rooms facing the front which was bigger than I had expected and had a great view across the harbour. The restaurant was not open at the time of our stay so I cannot comment on this.

Cons:

The room was cold and we couldn't get the heater to work, same goes for the TV but watching the comings and goings in the harbour provided enough entertainment.

See above.
Cons:

Extremely hot water and a mixing system inadequate. Toilet seat minus the holder on one side making it unsafe for sitting. The entire building is experiencing serious deferred maintenance. Once was a proud part of Stromness is looking less so. However, your staff was excellent as was the food.
