Exceptional lakefront setting, but the room and value fell short
Pros:

The Grand Hotel has by far the best location in Zell am See, with direct access to the lake and a truly beautiful setting. Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the lake, flowers, swans, and birds is still one of the most memorable hotel experiences I have had anywhere in the world. I have returned to this hotel every few years since 2014 because of its location and surreal atmosphere.
The food, particularly dinner, remains very good, with a nice selection including healthier options. Anna (Croatian) at the reception was especially kind and helpful with my family, and we appreciated being allowed a slightly later checkout, and also their celebratory decoration on the bed. The hotel showed flexibility toward me as the person paying for my family’s stay, allowing me to spend time with them during dinner even though I was not the registered guest. The room had useful amenities including a fridge and TV, and small touches such as apples were appreciated.

Cons:

Unfortunately, this stay did not feel worth the very high price. I deliberately paid more for a large room with a bed and sofa-bed area and expected a stronger lake-view balcony experience. Instead, the room was on the top floor (rooftop) with a balcony enclosed on both sides, so the lake view felt much more restricted than expected and could not really be fully enjoyed from inside the room. The room also became quite warm from direct sun exposure, and although a fan was kindly provided, it was not enough.
I was especially disappointed that the swimming pool, one of the main reasons I chose the hotel, was closed during our stay, with no alternative benefit or compensation offered.
The hotel also provides neither the Zell am See-Kaprun Mobility Card nor the Sommerkarte, which is a significant disadvantage because these can save guests a considerable amount on local transportation, cable cars, boat trips, and other attractions.
Room allocation through Booking.com could also be clearer. Based on my own experience and what I was told at checkout, guests wanting a particular room or view may be better off booking directly with the hotel and requesting it specifically. It would also help if guests were shown a more accurate picture of the room or view they are likely to receive before the booking becomes non-refundable.
Other smaller drawbacks were the feather pillows, the replacement of the individual bathroom amenities with large dispensers, and the number of steps at the main entrance, which can be inconvenient for elderly guests or those with mobility difficulties.
As a repeat guest since 2014, I still love the setting, terrace, breakfast, and food, but this stay fell short in terms of room comfort, included benefits, accessibility, and overall value.
