St James Hotel

Such a shame that this hotel hasn't moved forward since we were here 7 years ago and that it's still living on past glory. Remember that this review is based on our stay and our experience and that others may have about the hotel. For us growing up in the Town the St James Hotel was always a top quality hotel that those with more brass would stay at or those that wanted to have their wedding bash would choose. However times have moved on but this hotel has sadly remained static.
Firstly the Pros:

• Freindly staff
• Complimentary WiFi
• Tea & Coffee making facilities
• TV
• Desktop Fan
• Iron & Board
• Available room service
• Onsite parking at a very reasonable £3 (but remember to remove your valuables as this area has a high crime rate in general) and the car park is accessible from all surrounding walkways.
• Onsite restaurant
• Close to Town centre (but much building work ongoing for the next year/s so expect disruption.
• 3 minute walk from train station.
• 7 minute walk to bus terminal.
• 3 minute walk to local Wetherspoons.
• 6 minutes from A180.
•15 minutes from Cleethorpes.

Cons:

• 3 out of 5 plug sockets damaging cables as too close to desktop so only 2 (which are each end of the room are accessible).
• Shower head rail drilled more times than Bonnie Blue
• Bath looks like it hasn't seen a cleaner in a few months.
• Shower head doesn't extend above 5ft so if ya tall get ready for back ache having to bend down to wash ya head (this was also the same in my sisters room)
• Basin doesn't hold water as plug had perished or no seal.
• Carpet threadbare in places and stained to high hell.
• Furniture totally mismatched and damaged.
• Bathroom door step dirty and flaking.
• Doors not been painted in many a year.
• Bed very soft and not comfortable to sleep on (but again based on my preference)
• Bed base dirty and damaged.
• So very dated and in need of modernisation.
• Breakfast from 06:30 - 09:30 & from the full English items on the hotplates it appears that it's been sat since start of serving. Bacon was overly salty and like cardboard (I appreciate that people like well done bacon), Sausages were very hard to get through as they'd been sat so long, black pudding was like rubber and the scrambled egg was so dry it had totally separated into small bits. If you're wanting a decent breakfast I would honestly advise either cereal and toast or fresh toast with beans or freshly prepared poached eggs. There is also the Continental option.

I know a lot of readers will view this and say I'm being picky or overly unfair but the whole point of a review is to give an honest informative account of the experience. Alas this is why the room was as cheap as it was and that you only get what you pay for. The town is currently undergoing a massive much needed face-lift and once completed this hotel will be an unwanted eyesore unless a huge make over is given to it to once again make it a flag ship hotel for the Town.

Without a doubt, this is one of the worst hotels I’ve ever stayed in.
The cleanliness throughout the hotel was well below average and honestly felt like the cleaners simply didn’t care. Our original room was already disappointing, but after raising concerns, we were moved to another room — only to find that the new room was even worse than the first.
To make matters worse, there was a vile smell of cannabis throughout the hotel, which made it extremely unpleasant and uncomfortable to stay in. It’s unbelievable that a room in this condition would be considered acceptable to give to paying guests.
The overall cleanliness and general condition of the hotel really let it down. It felt like basic standards were simply not being maintained.
The breakfast was probably the only positive — it was okay and certainly the best part of the stay.
I appreciate that not every hotel stay can be perfect, but basic cleanliness, hygiene and a pleasant environment should be the bare minimum. Unfortunately, St James Hotel fell well short of that.
Extremely disappointing and somewhere I definitely wouldn’t stay again.

I must add the lady on reception although very busy was friendly and clearly knew she was working in a place that needed better standards. She was very helpful.
