Stunning Hotel, Shocking Service: A Tale of Used Slippers and Missing Butter
Pros:

As globe-trotting Marriott loyalists (from Osaka to Singapore to Newport Beach), we hold the brand to a high standard. Unfortunately, our stay at The Nines in Portland proved that a gorgeous building can only carry a hotel so far when the service quality dives off a cliff.

First, the good: The artwork is stunning, and the check-in team was phenomenal—a special shout-out to Ashley, the check-in/check-out team member who was delightfully helpful and sweet. Sadly, once we stepped past the lobby desk, the experience went completely downhill.

Housekeeping & Cleanliness: "Clean Enough" (Until the Slippers)
Public Areas: The elevator and restaurant lounge looked like a festival grounds after-party. Disposable cups and food wrappers littered the tables, with zero attendants in sight to clean up.

The Room: Opening the closet slipper pouch revealed a nightmarish surprise: two pairs of heavily used, sticky, hair-covered slippers featuring mysterious brown stains. Recycled dirty slippers in a luxury hotel room aren't just lazy—they're stomach-churning. When I brought this attention to the check-in desk, it was dismissed and the staff just shrugged like this is not a big deal.

Urban Farmer Steakhouse: A Masterclass in Avoidance
Our dining experiences at Urban Farmer on July 5th and July 6th, 2026, felt less like dining at a high-end steakhouse and more like trying to order food in a ghost town where the ghosts actively dislike you.

Sunday, July 5th, 2026
My breakfast sandwich arrived disassembled, featuring a lone piece of bacon sitting sadly on its own plate like an outcast.

The oatmeal tasted of stale, expired nuts—and near the bottom, I discovered a random slice of leftover pork. Nothing ruins a morning quite like mystery meat at the bottom of your oats.

Finding a server to address this was impossible, as staff seemed to be playing an elaborate game of hide-and-seek.

Monday, July 6th, 2026
The Great Blueberry Paradox: I requested blueberries in my pancakes. The server assured me they were out and waiting on a shipment. I pivoted and ordered a fruit bowl instead. Plot twist: The fruit bowl arrived loaded with blueberries. It turns out the blueberries existed; the effort to put them in a pancake did not.

The "Eight Other Things" Server: Trying to get basic items like creamer and butter was an Olympic sport. When I politely asked a female server (wearing glasses) if she could locate our server for some butter, she stared at me and snapped: "I'm doing EIGHT other things right now, SO NO!" She then resumed aimlessly pacing back and forth behind the counter.

The Ghost Crew: A second employee promised to bring butter and creamer, then vanished into thin air. Thankfully, a third male server—who wasn't even assigned to us—finally stepped up and kindly delivered what we needed.

Final Verdict
We pay premium prices for luxury service, not to be snapped at by employees who act like guest requests are a personal insult.

The Nines is a beautiful property, but management urgently needs to audit their restaurant staff and housekeeping quality control. Guests should not have to hunt down their own butter, creamer, dodge dirty slippers, or eat mystery meat in their oatmeal. We love the Marriott brand, but until this team undergoes serious retraining, we won't be back.

Nice, but VERY noisy
Pros:

Nice hotel, but no sound insulation in the rooms. We're used to city noises, but tram goes by every 15min and it feels like sleeping at the trainstation.

Generous Customer Service
Pros:

We had a family emergency the night of our stay and had to leave abruptly after only a few hours in the room. The Nines generously charged us only the cancellation price for our room instead of the full night that they could have rightfully recouped from us. Top notch organization with fabulous customer service, particularly at the front desk. Recommended with vigor.

Great parking for a thorns game.
Pros:

Reserved parking so we could go to a Thorns game. It worked out great. We rode the MAX two stops to the stadium. We had luggage in the car and appreciated the security.

Exceptional Service and Stunning Views in Downtown Portland
Pros:

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel! The staff was kind and attentive, and my room was comfortable with high ceilings and large windows. The downtown Portland location is fantastic for exploring the area.

Dinner at the restaurant on the top floor was a highlight—amazing views and delicious Asian-inspired cuisine complemented by expertly crafted cocktails. I would definitely recommend this hotel and look forward to returning!

Great Hotel and Location
Pros:

This property had outstanding service beginning with Arista at check in. He was professional, fast and explained all the amenities of the hotel. I had some perks since I booked through AMEX and they honored all the perks plus extras. The valet service and front staff security are excellent. They are fast to take your car and keep the area safe. The Departures Bar and restaurant on the roof is a must visit. Delicious food and the bar staff is outstanding. The Happy Hour Shrimp Toast was great and the local beer selection was fantastic. Less exciting was Urban Farmer, one of my favorite Denver, Colorado restaurants. This location didn’t measure up. The food was off and the service not professional. The same was true for breakfast. I hope the Urban Farmer Team gets in there and straightens it out because the Denver location is consistently fantastic. This should have no sway in affecting a stay at the Nines. It’s a great property with a well trained staff. The room was very clean and the daily housekeeper was wonderful too.
