Location: Exceptional. What a lovely, quiet neighborhood that was perfumed throughout by flowers! I've never experienced that anywhere else! Just the way I like it, this was within striking distance (a scenic walk for me!) of the Colosseum, and Trastevere's many restaurants, but separate from the action. It's also a walk from buses and trains, and about 3 train stops from Termini. The wonderful thing is that I went for the Italian Open. There is a bus, that's just down the street, that goes directly to Foro Italico where the tournament is held! It's a longer journey (I think about 40 minutes) but it weaves through some spectacular areas of the city. A must do, even if you're not going to tennis! It's that beautiful!
Cleanliness: Superb! Germaphobe here! I always do a wipe down upon entry, especially in the bathroom and high touch areas, and all came up clean! I particularly loved the toilet cleanliness certification that comes with a banner strapped to the toilet.
Value: Great, especially when considering the location.
Ambiance: Gorgeously quaint. I would strongly recommend that they hire professionals to take pictures of the space as the current pictures don't do it justice. I saw it, loved the reviews, but hesitated as the current pictures make it look old and stuffy. I literally had reservations at this and a more modern hotel up to a couple of days before because of this. It does have old charm but is definitely not stuffy!
Service: Great. The staff was polite. In particular, the older lady in the dining room was very pleasant. A prof/hotel owner once said in a Tourism Management lecture that you know you're in a high quality hotel when the staff smiled when you met them. She smiled and greeted with a "good morning" every day. I don't think she spoke much English, yet she was extremely attentive. Now, I'm not saying that everyone must know English but I know that many shy away when they cannot speak another language... but she just came out and ensured that she took care of everything... and was always pleasant!
Breakfast: Good. I'm don't eat breakfast but, because of my long days, I decided to grab a few items. It was a buffet and had everything I needed to keep me for hours later. I actually was amazed that all I needed was that, a couple of small munchies during the day, then dinner.
Safety: I felt extremely safe in that neighborhood and on the compound. Someone was always at the desk and the entrance to the property, and back door access to the building, were locked at a certain time of evening. After hours, I just had to buzz to get in.
My only peeve: I was placed in a room right next to the dining room. I'm a very light sleeper, especially when in a strange place. It didn't work for me! It could sleep six people easily so, if you're an early riser or a solid sleeper that doesn't mind the breakfast preparation noise, and/or have a big group, you must get that space. I was moved to another room... on the other side of the dining room, and right behind the elevator. I had to explain that I just wanted a quiet room as I was literally only there to sleep. They put me a couple floors above and all was well. What was amazing about this whole thing is that the hotel managed it very well. I am of the belief that things can surface at any time; it's how they're managed that makes the difference. Everything was handled well.
I love this property and plan to go back.
