Lovely welcoming dog friendly hotel ideally situated.
When booking, I felt this property was quite expensive compared with the other B&Bs we stayed at along the Coast to Coast route. However, it turned out to be worth every penny and was definitely one of the highlights of the 18 properties we stayed in during our recent walk.
Apparently, the hotel underwent substantial modernisation in 2025. The result is a bright, modern hotel with a lovely atmosphere and exceptionally friendly and welcoming staff.
Our bedroom was spacious, bright and comfortable, with probably the most comfortable bed and pillows we experienced on the entire route! The restaurant menu offered a good variety of dishes, and the food was beautifully prepared.
The staff were kind enough to offer us a lift from Clay Bank Top to save us the extra walk into Great Broughton. After a fantastic breakfast the following morning, they also dropped us off at the starting point for the next day's walk. This thoughtful service made such a difference and was very much appreciated.
All in all, a wonderful place to stay, with excellent hospitality, comfortable accommodation, great food and a lovely blend of historic character and contemporary style.
We would happily recommend it to anyone walking the Coast to Coast route.
Absolutely delightful experience. I hoped I was booking a walker friendly hotel with some decent bar food. It was much more than that: comfortable room, nice restaurant, friendly staff and good value money.

Stylish & elegant - very nicely refurbished - a pleasure to stay. And particularly valued the free transfer from & to Clay Bank Top, for walkers doing the Coast to Coast.

Arrived at the property and was told I had been double booked. Was told that the property was fully booked and that the guy was just on night watch.

We had a great stay here. Everything feels really luxurious, the staff were very friendly and we the breakfast and dinner were really good. Spacious room, comfy bed and good shower.

Great deco, good location for our needs.
Noise, a constant 'radio/music ' noise in our room from somewhere ( unsure if room nextdoor or below). It went on until midnight and restarted at 6. Which was dismissed by reception maybe just another guest. No hot water in the morning and inattentive waiting staff at breakfast ( 3 times we asked for butter to the same member of staff). We were disappointed and tired on Sunday.
Great helpfull staff, the first night we had a unsolvable problem in our room that they sorted out immediately. They gave us immediately an upgrade , which was a great solution.

This is a real hidden gem. Friendly welcome from excellent staff, our bikes safely stowed for the night. Room was modern and well presented with everything we needed. Bar and restaurant were also top notch. We’ll be back!

Gavin the driver picked us up on the road down from clay bank- the pick up and drop off service they offer for walkers is great.
Dinner was excellent, roast lamb was delicious, staff lovely.

Hotel was excellent through out, great staff, made the dog very welcome in the restaurant and bar area
Our room “Woody” was very hot, need all windows open in doing so was very noisy due the noise from the refrigeration units right out side. Breakfast was not the best long wait over 45 minutes and items were either over cooked or under cooked
What an experience. Beautiful accommodation. Excellent staff. Great food.
