Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa
Pros:

What a beautiful hotel and grounds with the added bonus of spa facilities. After our first night I mentioned to the receptionist ( Annie) that our shower didn’t work properly and the room was a bit dated. I was so surprised that she offered to move us to another room without any hesitation, which I wasn’t expecting. The room was spacious and beautiful with a fantastic shower.😂Breakfast was wonderful and all the staff very friendly. It was a wonderful 2 night break. Thank you Annie & Thornton Hall.

Fantastic stay
Pros:

We had a wonderful one night stay in the Penthouse Suite. The room was spacious, beautifully presented, and most importantly the bed was very comfortable.
We had a lovely meal in the restaurant. The food was delicious, especially the steak frites, which was incredibly tender. All the staff are very friendly and the service is attentive. We would definitely stay here again and look forward to returning.

Dangerously undercooked chicken that bleeds on your plate, but the staff prefer to argue
Pros:

I recently attended a catered event at this place which, tbh, has a good reputation.

However, this was one of the worst restaurant experiences I can remember for a very very long time. To be clear, I was not the organiser of the event. I was merely a guest.

So what was wrong?

The catering was a hot and cold buffet mix. The hot consisted of lamb skewers, chicken drumsticks that were allegedly Thai style, and gigantic potato wedges.

The lamb was bland and tasteless. The chicken may have been labelled as Thai but its only association with anything Thai was that it might have been stored in the same room as the Ty-Phoo tea bags.

The worst crime though was the state of the chicken. Under cooked and obviously so. The drumsticks oozed blood. The flesh was pink when the drumsticks were cut into, and on my plate they left a pool of chicken blood when they were picked up. The potato wedges were hard and under cooked.

I saw several people return drumsticks and complain to the mohican-haired guy in charge.

Undercooked chicken is highly dangerous. It can make you ill and in some cases it can kill.

So what reaction would we expect from staff? Apologies? No. Polite determination to create a satisfied customer? Certainly not. Instead, the mohican guy argued back. The chef (do they have one?) was, it was repeatedly said, satisfied. A lecture was given by him on internal temperatures and types of bacteria.

No. No. No. Hypothetically if loads of customers returned perfectly cooked and safe food, the basic rule of hospitality is that the customer is always right. Whisk the offending articles away, tell the customers they are right, apologise and make it good for your customers. You don't stand there and argue the toss when it is clearly patently undercooked and bleeding. For God's sake, a well-placed kiss of life could well have revived it!!

And also, good venues don't react to customer complaints by playing the blame game and saying it's the fault of another department.

Overall the staff seemed untrained, inexperienced and lacking in basic hospitality skills. The youth behind the bar thought the best way to serve up a Pimms and lemonade was to put some Pimms in a tumbler and splosh lemonade in, and that was it. Had he ever seen a Pimms and lemonade? I doubt it. No ice. No fruit, strawberry, cucumber, mint. Inept.

The staff did not present as trained, well-attired hospitality staff in a self-proclaimed luxury establishment. Presentation was clearly not a thing for them. If it was, I doubt they would wander round with dyed red hair, a black shirt that had seen better days and brown trousers.

Overall one of the worst experiences I have had. If I could give zero stars out of 5, I would.

Would i go there again (I repeat that I was a mere guest)? No. Not under any circumstances would I return to a venue where the management and staff clearly have no professionalism or leadership and which serves up food that has the ability to make me seriously ill

A really lovely stay just felt like they didn’t need to put extra charges on
Pros:

It was a lovely location, bar, restaurant and rooms were all lovely

Cons:

When you are paying such a lot of money to stay and for a spa treatment you would expect bathing robes to use for your stay to be in with the cost not a surcharge. Also we paid for bed, breakfast and evening meal with a budget of £49 per person, our bill came to £93 yet there was still a £9.73 service change at the end of the stay.

Lovely room, food not so great. Silly maximum drink when relaxing in outdoor spa area
Pros:

The snow cave was amazing!

Cons:

2 to 3 drink maximum when sitting outside as there are hot tubs. We werent the only guests to learn about this after we arrived. It let's the place down. You can go from the bar, have as many 2 4 1 cocktails as you like and return to the hot tub area. Its a pointless rule, that means we wont be returning and my the sounds of it neither will the other groups who stayed and were put off by the rule.
During dinner we realised the steak was undercooked. Cabbage was rock hard. They did reduce the bill but it was disappointing

Realaxing, romantic, good cocktails and lovely food with great fresh produce
Pros:

The location is beautiful and so peaceful, lovely for a wedding or romantic night away.
The spa has everything you need and a well equipped gym. We love the outside jacuzzi’s especially when the weather is good.
Well stocked bar by the spa and also in the main bar with very nice cocktails. Do a 2 for 1 between 3-00 pm and 6-00 pm.
Room and everywhere else is spotless with coffee making facilities in the room.
The staff from reception to the bars to the restaurant couldn’t have been any more attentive.

Cons:

Nothing it was all spot on!!

Pleasant and friendly hotel
Pros:

We stayed at the hotel following a family funeral. The staff who served us at the wake were very good. They were constantly checking the food, clearing tables and proving drinks at the bar.

We ate in the Brasserie in the evening. This was very nice. It was quiet and relaxed, just what was needed after such a sad day. The service and the food were very good and there was rush to vacate the table.

The room was very nice but lacked air conditioning which would have been ideal but there was a fan in there so it wasn’t unbearable.

The following morning, the hotel manager asked how the previous day had gone and asked if everything was ok - this was a lovely touch and very nice of him to ask.

Breakfast was a buffet style with plenty of options available.

Overall a pleasant place to stay with attentive and friendly staff.

An Absolutely Wonderful Stay!
Pros:

We recently stayed at Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa and had a truly fantastic experience from start to finish. The spa itself was incredibly relaxing, but what really made our visit stand out was the exceptional service we received in the restaurant.
We were served by Lara and Finn, two outstanding young people who are an absolute credit to the hotel. They were incredibly well-mannered, attentive, and went above and beyond to make sure our dining experience was perfect. It is rare to find such genuine hospitality and professionalism, and their warm service really made our stay memorable.
Thank you, Thornton Hall, and a massive thank you to Lara and Finn! We will definitely be back.

Excellent Hotel
Pros:

Good rooms, excellent food and service and very helpful and friendly staff.

A proper Wirral jewel.

A few noisy guests returning to rooms late at night spoiled what would have been a 5 star rating for sleep quality. But that's no fault of the hotel or excellent staff.
