Staff muito gentil
Falta ar condicionado e cortinas que escureçam o quarto
Appalling afternoon high tea. No tea leaves here just good old value tea bags plonked in a tea pot. Awful sandwiches cheese and pickle and ham and mustard as dull as ditchwater. The sloppiest cakes ever which made me feel ill and a hard baked scone which was just about edible
Breakfast was very good and seat by the window was lovely
The evening meal. Was over priced for what it was. I ordered duck and expected a full breast or leg and thigh. There were only 2 slices of smoky, tough duck. The veg was over cooked. Very disappointing.
After getting locked in the main Tavistock car park ( which closes at 4pm, despite arriving around 4pm) this hotel was a lifeline. Friendly staff and good food / drink. Co-op near by which is useful when all your belongings get locked in the car park!
Nice character building and the grounds are pretty.
It was a little warm, but that can’t be helped in an old character property that would find it hard to justify air-con. However a fan was available in the room and the window opened without any noise outside.
I assumed there would be a lift to the upper floor...given that there was one from the car park.
The air conditioning comprised one window which did not open more than 6 inches and the fan simply moved the hot air around the room.
NO AC..it was too hot in our room
The Bedford Hotel is owned by Warm Welcome Hotels who also operate the Two Bridges Hotel a few miles away up on Dartmoor. I stay at Two Bridges quite often, but the Bedford less frequently, my previous stay was four years ago when Two Bridges could not accommodate me for two of my chosen six days holiday.
This June I decided to have a few days in Penzance and though it would be nice to have two nights staying at The Bedford on the way home. The Bedford really is a lovely hotel, nice, period, and traditional with very similar vibes to Two Bridges but set in an urban environment in the heart of Tavistock which is one of England’s nicest towns. The Grade II listed building has an interesting history and the architecture is impressive.
I was allocated Room 8 on the first floor of the building to the rear overlooking the channel of the Tavistock Canal and the former Abbey curtain wall. Beyond that is the River Tavy, though out of sight it is audible in a pleasant way if one prefers to sleep as I do with an open window.
I booked Dinner, Bed and Breakfast direct with the hotel. The food was excellent, like that offered at Two Bridges, but the menu is slightly more extensive and the opening hours of the Woburn Restaurant longer in the evening. The food is sourced from local suppliers from Cornwall and Devon their locations being identified on a map in the menu.
The first evening I had Leak and Potato soup, followed by Dartmoor Steak for the main course and concluded with a dessert of Tamar Valley Strawberry trifle. The second evening for starters I had Tomato Soup, followed by Jail Ale Steak Pie, concluded with West Country Cheese collection. All excellent.
Breakfast was also very good with the usual buffet items as well as served main dish which is freshly prepared.
Since my last visit the bar has been remodelled but is still nice and of course serves the excellent Jail Ale.
During my stay I also managed to encounter the now famous Tavistock cat – Sir Polo who is known for visiting various businesses around town and has his own Facebook page!
The Bedford offers excellent value for money. From time to time I have stayed at a branch of a certain chain hotel that favours purple décor in Wales and have paid more for two nights room only than I paid for two nights Dinner, Bed and Breakfast at The Bedford.
I really need to visit The Bedford more often!!!
Lovely staff and great hotel.
Room was way too hot!
Could not sleepwell
As a solo traveller I had a single room but it did have a double bed which was very comfortable. Plenty of wardrobe space. Spacious ensuite shower room.
I had breakfast on both days. Good choice at the buffet and on the hot breakfast menu cooked to order. The evening menu also had a very good choice and varied slightly each evening. The staff were professional, friendly and the service was excellent.
Due to the extreme heat it was disappointing that the windows were unable to be opened but a fan was supplied. The furniture and fittings were rather dated but the shower room was very modern with an excellent shower.
Goede locatie, en een sfeervol oud engels hotel.
Geen lift, en we hadden een kamer op de tweede verdieping. De douche had maar een klein straaltje.
Our room was good, staff were friendly, breakfast was good
Full length mirror on wardrobe door would be better on the left hand door as it doesn’t stay open properly to check yourself. No shower cap in the bathroom or a grab rail to get out of bath or shower.
No visible management around, there was a wedding on and between the lull there was paper mess all up the front steps and reception area, which didn’t look good and could easily have been tidied up.
Historical hotel. Really liked all of the photos through the years of local people and royal visitors.
It was a lovely old hotel and historical. There was nothing we didn't like.
Location good, public rooms good
Bedroom disappointing, shower poor, had to pay extra for parking because didn’t book direct!
Breakfast was amazing.
I have stayed at The Bedford many times and it never disappoints. It is always friendly and relaxed and the food is brilliant. Extremely good value
