ALL of the staff were welcoming, helpful, polite, friendly and professional. A real credit to the hotel.
It's a beautiful building with ample space to park. The evening meal was delicious, from a decent choice of meals. Prices were reasonable.
The breakfast was a wide choice of food including cereals, croissants, muffins, brown or white toast, jams, marmite, 4 different fresh juices, coffee, tea, full cooked breakfast. All self serve and refreshed when empty. Well worth the extra expense on top of the room. Couldn't fault the choices.

The mattress is so uncomfortable. They are soft and it ruins your posture at night. I had no windows in my room, just a balcony door. BUT, I needed cool air at night, there’s no fan or aircon, so it got really stuffy at night and I woke up sweating and didn’t feel rested
Location and proximity which suited to why we visited and stayed in Alton.
Food offering was not good. Eventhough it was a new menu, the quality was way below par and for the price.

Had an evening meal there. Good value but very poor quality. Chips not cooked properly as over done. Fish was a cheap packet fish and tasteless.

⭐️ 1 star — Extremely disappointing stay
On arrival, you can immediately tell that the hotel is extremely dated and in serious need of refurbishment.
When I asked reception where the lift was, the receptionist looked at me as though I had asked the most bizarre question and simply replied, “There isn’t one.” This would have been useful information to know beforehand, especially as some members of our party are disabled.
We then discovered that we had to climb four sets of stairs, before going back down another set of stairs and walking along to our room with a heavy suitcase. It was a huge shock and certainly not what we expected. To make matters worse, the three rooms we booked weren’t even located near each other.
Unfortunately, the room itself was disgusting. There were visible handprints on the blinds, an enormous amount of dust, carpets that looked stained and as though they hadn’t been properly vacuumed, and dust covering the surfaces and TV units.
The bathroom was by far the worst part. There were wires hanging out, broken pipes, and around the taps there was what appeared to be old, rotten and mouldy silicone piled on top of previous layers. The taps themselves were also spurting water.
Overall, this was genuinely the vilest hotel stay I have ever experienced. The condition of the room and bathroom was completely unacceptable, and the lack of basic accessibility information was extremely disappointing.
I would never return to this hotel. Honestly, I would rather pay the same money to stay at a Premier Inn and know exactly what I’m getting.
Sadly, I cannot recommend the Alton House Hotel at all.
If you want, I can also  make it even more savage and sarcastic while still keeping it believable enough to post publicly.

Good value had what I needed
Lovely choice of food. Just one little niggle: the oat milk for my cereal came in ‘pyramid’ shapes which when opened squirted everywhere!
