Location. Historic old pub and hotel. Great walks. Stunning views.
Not a dislike but……Service at breakfast on two out of three mornings was slow, due to staff shortages I guess. The third morning was good. And the system for selecting breakfast choices was inefficient- our choice sheet was lost one morning and muddled on another morning, as were several other guests’ lists. A more efficient system would be good - how about a stack of sheets , a pen and a small box on the table near the kitchen door? Guests must take responsibility for completing a sheet anytime the previous day before 11pm, and putting it in the box, chef could pick up all sheets when he/she arrives for work.
We returned again as we enjoyed the quiet, timeless ambience, lovely decor and peace of the Old Dungeon ghyll Hotel.
Please dont update or change it!
The views of mist, mountains shrouded by pouring rain were simply beautiful 😍
Situated in an exceptional location.
Thank you again, lovely staff 😊
Nothing
The beds were probably the comfiest we’ve ever slept in. The location is great for exploring the Lakes
A fried breakfast deserves a hash brown
Fantastic location. Great facilities and lovely staff.
All good
We only stayed for 1 night, but location was great. We had a room with a beautiful mountain view. Staff was very family friendly and helpful, our son is autistic and they were very understanding, also were able to accomodate seperate place for us to have a breakfast, so we didnt have to worry. Definitely recommend.
Nothing.
Incredible location, great food and the packed lunch was great too! Super comfy beds and room with excellent facilities. Private bathroom opposite the bedroom.
The hotel is in an enviable location for mountain walking and climbing and is of great historic significance in the context of the early days of mountain exploration. There is a lot of artwork around the hotel featuring the area. My room was comfortable and the meals were very good.
The public areas could do with a little refurbishment without taking away the olde-worlde charm.
Location is ideal for walkers in Great Langdale - it's unnecessary to use your car and you have access to a lot of great walks.
Good, basic food for people doing a lot of exercise! Good variety of choice for breakfast. Our room was pretty cool in hot weather and was reasonably quiet in the evenings. An amazing setting.
We had the impression that the staff were under a lot of pressure, leading to minor mistakes and occasional lack of communcation. Packed lunch is unimaginative - chocolate bars are useless in hot weather on the hill, sandwiches quite boring e.g. cheese but no tomato, tuna (?without mayonnaise? - didn't choose this option), ham on its own. Beer excellent, head barman quite rude. Menu quite limited - but you can always walk down to the New DG Hotel, which has a more varied menu.
Location and friendliness of the staff
A great location for walkers. It was a good, hearty breakfast and I couldn't fault any of the ingredients or service.
I was grateful for the free wifi because there is no mobile phone signal in the valley. There is if you climb out of the valley but it is tough going getting the elevation.
I liked the authentic old-world feel and the staff were all friendly. The only issue I had was the toilet flush handle was loose but it worked when you got the knack.
Classic charm
The location was breathtaking. The whole atmosphere in the hotel just suited it.
The staff were so kind and tried to help with everything they could. Even trying their best to make the impossible possible in the heat of the time of year.
Food was amazing! No problems with wifi
Couldn't fault them on anything at all.
