Exceptional piece of history
Nothing! Everything was fabulous!
The room with sea view was literally on the edge of the shore - it was lovely and spacious as well. Facilities were clean. Food is really good, especially the breakfast which is superb for this price. The bar and restaurant offer good coverage for food, snacks and drinks throughout the day so on days we stayed in we didn't feel like anything is missing. Obviously the surrounding area is exquisite so that helped with feeling relaxed and being ale to take in the surroundings.
Dinner was a bit overpriced. Would have loved more privacy in the room, as it was just a gauze curtain covering the floor to ceiling windows and there is a communal walkway on the terrace in front. So if you want some sun and sea views in your room, you have to have the whole door open.
The location was great.

Lovely hotel, but expensive for what you get
We had a pleasant stay at The Red Lion in Clovelly and, to be fair, there wasn’t a great deal we could fault. The hotel has plenty of character and you can’t really beat the location, which makes it a lovely place to stay when visiting Clovelly.
Our main issue was the price. We paid £250 for a double room, and at that rate we just didn’t feel it represented particularly good value for money. When you’re paying £250 a night, you naturally expect a little more to be included and for the overall experience to feel that bit more special.
We booked through Booking.com and, unfortunately, nothing was included with the room rate. At £250 a night, we felt that something such as breakfast or another added benefit would have made the price feel more justified.
We also ate in the hotel’s restaurant and unfortunately felt that it was very expensive for what was offered. While some of the food was perfectly enjoyable, we were disappointed with some of the dishes, particularly the starters, which we felt were not up to the standard or quality you would expect given the prices.
We understand that hotel prices vary depending on the time of year, and The Red Lion charges around £180–£200 per night for a double room in other months. At that price, we would say it represents much better value and we’d be more than happy to stay again.
Overall, a lovely hotel in a fantastic location and a pleasant stay, but £250 a night for a double room, combined with the expensive restaurant, made it difficult for us to feel that it offered good value for money. At £180–£200, however, we think it would be much better value.
Amazing location in the harbour. Rooms very comfortable and great food
The location was simply a wow moment. The staff greeting was wonderful.
Unfortunately while emailing and mentioning to reception that I was coeliac the kitchen was not informed and the food was appalling.
The food was terrible and as your a captive audience not a lot you can do. We’re in a fishing village and their seafood pizza arrived with tin tuna and tinned itty bitty prawns. It was overcooked the crusts were dry and inedible. My one choice as a coeliac was an ordinary bit of fish, a tatty salad and chips. The staff in the bar had a couldn’t care less attitude. The room was worn and tatty in parts.
The view is absolutely outstanding. We left our room window open all night to hear the sound of the sea. The hotel decor throughout is beautiful.
On arrival we felt uncomfortable that we were told bluntly that checking in time was 3pm. We’d had a long journey and were around 40 minutes early. Not a great start but no other issues. Walking around the village is not for the faint hearted. It is extremely steep and the streets are cobbled.

The location within a stone’s throw from the beach and picturesque harbour could never be surpassed.
The breakfast was first class. The staff were v friendly and efficient. Our room was clean.
One might consider the stay on the expensive side, however, we chose the Red Lion Hotel as a treat and it was a real highlight of our stay in Devon.
Nothing. If I was being picky the shower had two options, a ceiling rose or smaller wall mounted one. The flow of the latter was a little intermittent
