Categories

Cleanliness
7.8
Generally described as clean in parts (breakfast room, some rooms) but several comments note tired decor, smells from a toilet area and need for maintenance, so cleanliness is slightly below average due to occasional odour and visible wear.
Service
9.2
Consistently praised: friendly, helpful and accommodating staff (including specific praise for a waitress and accommodation of dietary needs), warm welcome and good service in dining areas.
Location
8.6
Multiple reviewers highlight a pleasant, quiet, green setting and good gardens/parking; one note that it is fairly remote and can host weddings, but overall location is a strong positive.
Room Quality
6.8
Several guests reported small or dated rooms, low water pressure, lumpy beds and some maintenance issues (broken shower, tiny windows); room comfort is a clear area for improvement.
Amenities
8.4
Good on amenities mentioned: restaurant/bar, parking, pet-friendly facilities and pleasant gardens; wedding-venue activity can impact ambience at times.
Value for Money
8
Generally considered good value by reviewers (explicit praise for value and adequacy for short stays), though some feel the property needs investment which tempers perceived value slightly.
Food and Beverage
9.2
Very strong consensus that evening meals and breakfast are excellent—well presented, tasty and with good choices—one of the hotel's standout features.
Overall Experience
7.6
Overall positive, with warm service, excellent food and a lovely setting balanced against a tired building, occasional smells, noise from weddings and some room shortcomings.

Peaceful location, comfortable room, lovely food
Pros:

Quiet location (note, there were very few guests due to being during the week rather than an event weekend). Room (no. 6) twin/double ensuite with garden views was a very pleasant room to stay in.
Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Full English was excellent (bacon was well-cooked) and veggie breakfast was also very good. We had an evening meal and prices were competitive with gastropubs and the quality was excellent.
Bar prices were ok but a little on the high side. Would have been nice to see some local bottled beers but also good that there was one bottled ale rather than none.
Access to footpaths nearby and 15 minute walk to main road for buses to Hartlepool and Peterlee.

Cons:

Slightly high bar prices (small discount for those staying might be an idea?)

Pros:

Staff were brilliant and the food was great they obviously have a very good chef and team
Room was very good apart from the water problem and shower

Cons:

The shower was poor the water trickled through so not good
Cold water tap again was a trickle we reported it on the second day of our stay but by day four when we left it was still poor

Very disappointed, I don’t think we will be rushing back!
Pros:

Good location for the purpose of our trip.
Nice breakfast & polite & friendly staff.

Cons:

Very worn and tired. Shower was terrible, poor flow of water and dirty, bathroom door would not shut either. Bed was far too soft, both had bad backs the next morning.
Lots of peeling wallpaper on landing, whole place just needs a lot of money spending on it.
Decorated in loads of different styles, all needs some sort of bringing together.
Looks lovely from the front of the building, it’s gorgeous, but drive round to park and the place is in a bit of a state and for some reason a used car sales lot in the car park?

Overall I enjoyed my stay.
Pros:

Quiet location. Staff very helpful and friendly. Room comfortable and thankfully a fan provided in the room.

Cons:

Very disappointed with the evening meal. Only 5 small pieces of chicken in the Korma sauce. Naan bread overcooked and solid. Definitely not worth the heavy price.

It was just average, lovely setting, room a bit tired, breakfast wasn't awful, but not great.
Pros:

Staff on Sunday morning were pleasant, room was ok, breakfast was ok and setting was great, lovely from outside and good base to visit North East.

Cons:

Room was a bit tired, smell of mould, but then replaced with awful farming smell, when asked to move rooms, the night staff was very dismissive saying they were full, didn't seem too bothered, not apologetic, being full is fine, but offering no empathy or apology is not acceptable.
