Lovely room
Good aircon
Very good breakfast
Very poor room service
Location was lovely, could walk to every thing
Nothing
Beautiful clean room, great location.
Problems on check-in with front of house. Other staff did work to resolve it but you wouldn’t expect the issue we experienced from a 5 star hotel.
The location is great - very close to station and walkable to everywhere. The door men were extremely helpful and friendly - big shout out to Wayne. All the staff were great and helpful at breakfast. They left a nice chocolate plate and card for our welcome.
The room wasn’t completely spotless - bathroom shower wasn’t cleaned or polished to detail. For the cost of the hotel and the attention to detail, it doesn’t seem like a 5*. I would think it was a 4*.
Staff were uniformly exceptionally friendly, helpful and efficient.
Good
Separate toilet
Enjoyed a great few days stay for a short break. Hotel and facilities excellent and reasonable value. We will visit again in future.
Only negative our room was at the rear and was quite noisy during the night with bins being clattered etc disturbing sleep.
In the centre and well appointed
Nothing to dislike
We stayed recently for a celebration (anniversary) we booked a room for one night and also the afternoon tea. I feel the review of the hotel needs to be separate from the afternoon tea review as our experience of the two differed quite a bit.
The hotel was lovely. As the name (and price) say it is a very grand hotel. Lovely wide corridors, fresh flowers everywhere. The room itself was very spacious clean and lots of amenities. I particularly enjoyed the bath and waterfall shower. It was great having a coffee machine and a fridge to keep the milk in so it stayed cold. Bed was comfy and we both slept well.
The team made our stay a bit extra by putting a card and chocolates in our room for our anniversary (we had informed them beforehand).
We spent a little time in the bar in the evening and they had a great singer/pianist on in there. Nice cocktails but again as you would expect higher than average price point (£14-16 each). Pretzels with drinks were nice though.
We opted for the breakfast which was pricier than any breakfast we had eaten at a hotel before (£30 each). The choice was massive in terms of both continental and cooked offerings so can see why the price point is higher. Cooked offerings were good nice crispy bacon and tiny delicious hash browns. Service was quick and very attentive for the breakfast. Lovely little mini shot of fancy juice at the start too. Only negative for the stay and breakfast- couple of tired areas in the room itself (204) chipped corners on bathroom mirror and damp leak type stain on ceiling in entrance way (clean on the room was spotless-no complaints there!) and prongs of the fork at breakfast were bent. These are both very minor.
Hotel itself was close to York (walking distance). We didn't use valet parking and instead parked at the train station long stay (apcoa) which was £19 for 24 hours but is cheaper at the weekends. We didn't use the spa so can't comment on this.
We had a voucher bought for us for a 3 course lunch in the Legacy restaurant and have just had the most wonderful experience. The food was presented and described with precision and each course was delicious. I cannot praise our waiter Sam highly enough. He was friendly, polite and so knowledgeable on the wines he served with each course. Look forward to visiting again and trying the taster menu next time.
