Unique Matera experience, but the €460 candlelight dinner was an overpriced disappointment.
Pros:

A truly unique property in an extraordinary location. The staff was warm and welcoming, breakfast was very good, and staying in an authentic cave was a fascinating experience that we are glad we had.

Cons:

For us, one night was more than enough, the cave was extremely humid and, despite the restoration, there appeared to be mold on some walls. Our biggest disappointment, however, was the €460 candlelight dinner: a magical setting, but the food and wine were nowhere near the standard or price, the music stopped after about 80 minutes, and after nearly three hours of waiting we left before dessert. I would strongly recommend experiencing the hotel, but dining elsewhere.

Sadly, it was way too damp to be sleeping in.
Pros:

The property is quite extraordinary in its idea about keeping caves as original as possible and we were blown away when we entered our bedroom as it looked very special. Breakfast was outstanding.

Cons:

It was so damp that I simply could not sleep. The musty smell was so overpowering. It felt very unhealthy. Our clothes and bags were damp the next morning It was too dark and we needed our phone torches to move around. The staff mentioned that this was because the weather was humid. But if I had known the conditions of our room was based on the weather then I would not have chosen to stay there, especially as it is so expensive.

Not sure I would stay again …

The GREAT: Daniel the porter, as well as the restaurant and breakfast staff - brilliant- thank you so much!!

Cons:

The mediocre: 1000AUD per night for a “charming” rustic cave experience at a UNESCO site was “interesting” value. No fridge and no safe in the room - not even a toilet-roll holder!! The lighting is mostly provided by candles with some dim hidden lighting. So there is not enough light to read a book. Oh - did I mention? No TV!! So make sure you have some content downloaded onto your phone or tablet. The bad: strong concert piano at breakfast and dinner is not very relaxing. I want to call out the male reception staff member starting with an ‘M’. Mate, you were BRUSQUE to the point of being almost RUDE, when I paid my account. You are “the face of the company” and supposed to provide customer service. You really need to do better. Or perhaps it’s time for a career change?? You really left a poor impression on me. Would I come back to stay?? I am not sure I would. James from Australia

Totally unique hotel experience in historic Matera
Pros:

Totally unique experience! Caves converted into hotel rooms. Incredible work was done to preserve the authentic Matera caves. The room, overall hotel facilities, staff were all excellent.

Fantastisch verblijf in een unieke omgeving
Pros:

Het ontbijt was erg goed en uitgebreid, personeel meer dan vriendelijk en behulpzaam. Voor ons was de locatie prima maar voor ouderen houd er rekening mee dat er veel trap moet worden gelopen

Cons:

Je moet vooraf boeken voor het diner, de kok is er op de 1 of andere manier niet op ingesteld dat er (oke laatste moment) 2 personen bijkomen terwijl er tafels genoeg over zijn.

Once in a lifetime experience
Pros:

This is an exceptional property. From start to finish the staff were fantastic, friendly and knowledgeable about the property. This really is a once in a lifetime experience. The set up is fantastic. Dining room in the cave is a one off.
