Highly recommend the tour/guide of the hotel, Phil made the place come alive and was both interesting and amusing. What a shame he couldn’t show us an unoccupied castle room to get a feel of the place. His tour flew by and lasted 2 and a half hours, with a lovely cup of tea at the end.
NB there is a Escape Room experience at the castle which is owned by another company, and a couple had been and said it was very good. It is not well advertised though.
Staying in an old castle meant we had to be careful as we walked about due to uneven paving, steps in many places, and heavy doors, which was all part of the stay. The room in the annexe was good, but we could have been anywhere-the castle rooms I’m sure were far more characterful, but more expensive. The Knights restaurant evening meal was delicious and had an interesting menu. Breakfast was always generous, but often the bacon was over cooked (we were there 3 nights), and the poached eggs were tiny, but very nicely done, and on one busy morning we did seem to wait a long time. For a 4 star hotel we were a little surprised there was no offer to have our suitcases taken to our room.
Wonderful castle, full of character. Food excellent, staff friendly.
Nothing
Breakfast was very good. Room number 38 is just perfect for what our requirements were.
.
We stayed in Courtyard room which meant that we had to walk across the courtyard to get into the main part of the hotel. I can see that, that could be an issue if the weather is inclement.
We stayed for two nights so we could visit the Beamish Living Museum.
Breakfast was very good with an extensive self service Continental style plus a full menu of cooked with table service.
My only complaint was. The Library bar has a food menu but all the tables are a knee height which I think are far too low.
I would not hesitate to recommend the Lumley Castle
Historical value
Not much to do other than eat and look around the castle
The shower is nice, bed was good comfy.
The curtains, even with it closed the sun came in. And the room was super hot during the heat wave, it came with a small fan, but had no effect. pillows weren't great for me, as I prefer firmer pillows.
The history
It’s extremely tired. We had to drag our bags up multiple floors and to the back of beyond. The food was okay but way overpriced and the wait staff needs more training. The front desk was excellent.
The Customer service via WhatsApp and quick response to any issues was a credit to the staff. Also the lady serving in the library bar on Sunday night was really polite and good at her job. Loved the location, the castle is stunning, loved the courtyard area and seeing the bats flying round at night. It was peaceful too.
It was stupendously hot in the room to the point we couldn't breathe which given it was 30 degrees outside I appreciate there's not a lot they could do!! We were left a fan but it was covered in dust and I had to ask someone to come and clean it. Only 1 of the windows opened in our room but we did see that some rooms had 2 windows (were we in a room designated for booking.com guests?)
Twice I left the pillow off the bed in hope it would be changed as it had black dots on it that looked like mould. I eventually asked for it to be changed as it kept being put back on the bed as it was.
My partner and I both stood on a sharp screw sticking out on the part of the door between the bathroom and the room and I had to ask for that to be screwed down which I will say was done straight away (thank you).
Given the heat inside the room and lack of air, I think the hotel could have provided more than 1 bottle of water each for our stay. It was so bad on the Monday that we had to go out quite late as we couldn't breathe in there.
There were quite a lot of cobwebs in the room which didnt massively bother me but did give an air of uncleanliness along with the tea stains on the floor.
The ladies serving in the bar on Tuesday night were quite miserable in comparison to the Sunday night. You had to go up and order drinks despite it not being busy and weren't even greeted with a hello when requesting drinks. It was also very clear that one of them had no idea how to make a mojito when I heard her ask a colleague what goes in one and then it came with half a mint plant stuck in it and a slice of lime.
Traditional old medieval castle , left item in room and staff were quickly to call and sort it out .
Left bags at reception and then when we went to check in later bags were already delivered at the room.
Rooms abit dated but in style with the castle, good value for money. Gorgeous setting and grounds
quiet, comfy
Bar food is poor value
Lovely medieval castle. Friendly, efficient staff. Free parking and lovely walk around woods. Room was warm and very comfortable with four poster bed and good shower.
Nothing not to like.
The whole experience, the staff were very welcoming beautiful manners
The room very impressive
Everything was perfect
The long walk for myself as I'm disabled and use a stick
I wish I'd known about the long walk to restaurant and also the venue where my friends party was also to my room
I managed by sitting resting and also with the kind help from Shaun I was very grateful for his help a couple of times.
The hotel is full of character and history, in beautiful surroundings with very friendly and helpful staff. We stayed in the courtyard, the room was very small but comfortable for an overnight stay.
