No understanding of Ambassador member benefits (which I did not receive). Little or no leadership on show and a pale shadow of what this hotel once was. It felt almost like an airport hotel, where staff are aware most guests are only there for a few hours and service reflects that model.
emplacement parfait, un tres bel hotel. attention dans l'ancien partie il n'y a que des suites
rien
Ideal location for Eurostar
Nothing
While spending time in both the hotel bar and restaurant, my party and I observed multiple mice actively running around the lounge area while having drinks, at times coming within approximately two feet of where we were seated. As guests of a five-star hotel, this was both shocking and deeply unsettling. The presence of rodents in food and beverage areas raises obvious concerns regarding cleanliness, sanitation, and guest safety.
Had this occurred on the first day of our stay, I would have checked out and found alternative accommodations. Unfortunately, the incident significantly detracted from what should have been a premium hospitality experience and left us feeling uncomfortable and disgusted.
A 5-star Marriot Autograph Collection hotel of this reputation and standard should maintain rigorous pest-control and sanitation measures, particularly in areas where food and drinks are served. Witnessing multiple mice in public guest spaces is simply unacceptable and falls far below the expectations associated with a luxury property.
The lack of surprise or concern by the staff was actually appalling. I have multiple videos that I am more than happy to share as we sat at our seats with our feet off the ground. When asked to move immediately to the other restaurant we were told that one actually has more MICE! When raising my concern at the front desk clearly it’s a known issue and they were not in the least bit concerned that a guest was should just deal with this blatant regard of cleanliness and sanitation among other things.
It’s a rip off . When I tried to check in they said the room wouldn’t be ready for 2 hours but could offer a junior suite immediately at an extra 200 pounds !
When my son checked in the following day they tried to push him into a suite as well , when he declined they said they were upgrading him anyhow
Atmospheric and lovely features
Little dark - we were in rm 248 which had 2 steps leading down to bedroom area which wasn’t ideal and could cause a hazard falling. Lighting in the room was a bit dark
I loved the historic building, the restaurant and details everywhere.
The bed was too low, not very comfortable. Otherwise the room and bathroom were spacious and well equiped.
Convenient for the Eurostar; there was a pool - small but that’s all I was looking for.
Reception staff - very pleasant and friendly, but didn’t explain the lifts to me (a fellow guest had to show me), gave me the wrong opening times for the pool, didn’t explain about other things available to me
Waiting staff - a couple were ok, nothing special, but kind of did their jobs. One male waiter was unfriendly and unhelpful, actually discourteous when I went up to him to ask how I should pay (I’d expect in a place like that I wouldn’t have to go looking for someone)
I have since apparently been overcharged for a light meal and glass of wine I had - about £75 added to my bill for that. I haven’t had time yet to take that up with the hotel, but that will be a pain to get sorted, and added to the pain of paying £485 for a meh experience.
In the morning, staff seemed surprised that I had a train to catch, and while smiley, weren’t helpful about getting me some breakfast in a timely fashion. I didn’t want anything wonderful, just normal service in the circumstances.
My reading now is, poor training, probably poor management.
The pool was in as a spa pool, but the towels were hard to find, thin and distinctly grey (beyond their natural beige). Odd, at that price.
The room was nothing special, the lighting was poor, there was nowhere to place my suitcase so I could pack. The charging point was far from the bed.
Generally, I’ve had warmer better service and pleasanter stays in a motorway motel for £60 a night.
Beautiful old building and location with lovely staff.
The renovation/modernisation is a bit soulless and shabby in places.
Bâtiment historique somptueux, personnel adorable
It’s grandeur
The hotel atmosphere was great and enjoyed the restaurant and bar. However, very disappointed with the room that had steps that did not illuminate well and middle of night, I fell and bruised my face as I fell right on the step. Was very disappointed with the staff that just wanted security to review and then didn't offer anything for what happened- they only did give me 4,000 points after I complained. This could have happened to anyone and they really need to fix this as someone who is older than me (29 years old) could have really gotten seriously hurt.
Great location
Staff weren’t that helpful and the room wasn’t clean. Floor looked like it hadn’t been hoovered
Enjoyed this stay a lot at the start of our rail journey to Latvia. The rum punch ceremony is fun at 5.05 each day and had o good meal in the famous Booking Office bar, which was lively with friendly and efficient staff. There used to be a fine-dinning restaurant and club lounge but both these are now closed.
Had a wander and a tipple or two at the nearby Coal Drops Yard.
Our room was a touch pokey and in the rafters of the Barlow Wing but was clean and comfortable - fine for a one night stay. Expensive though for what it is.
To get to the Eurostar, you just exit through The Booking Office, take the lift and you’re virtually at Eurostar check in.
Deducted a star in this review because I didn’t get my room upgrade as a Marriott Gold Elite - often don’t - perhaps it’s me! Did get a glass of Prosecco at check in though.
A wonderful historic building, beautifully refurbished. All staff were polite and friendly without being "over the top" (it felt genuine). Loved the 2 little talks about different alcoholic beverages (which ended with a complimentary taster of the drink!)
Our shower room looked amazing but, as is often the case with great looking bathrooms, the shower water pressure wasn't the greatest (we were in a loft room).
We would have preferred a buffet style breakfast - in the restaurant everything was served at your table - fortunately we went to breakfast early so had the time to wait (we had a Eurostar to catch). It would have been useful to know that in advance.
