My place to stay in Zurich

This hotel is exceptional value in what is an expensive city to visit. I was able to get into my room on arrival, which was greatly appreciated. The room was much more spacious than I expected and stylishly decorated. I had two big windows so plenty of light. The terrace next to the river was a perfect place on a warm, sunny day to relax with a drink. Location was excellent, within easy walking distance of the train station and the lake.

We stay in a Double Room Cosy for 2 nights. It is a very basic room for the price but perhaps this is typical of this city.
The good:
- the staff were lovely and were eager to help
- the room was very clean and neatly laid out
- the room was very quiet, as requested
- the room had usb charging points so we didn’t need converters for the sockets
- there are two rooms on ground level where you can sit and have a coffee from their Nespresso machine. Having this facility was so important for us, given the size of our room
- the location is good with a 12 minute walk from the train station and plenty of restaurants, bakeries and a supermarket a few minutes walk away
The challenges
- the room was so tiny, with nowhere to put suitcases
- the only place for hanging clothes is a coat rack with 2 hangers
- there is no safe so we had to carry all our valuables with us
- the room did not have a built in air con system (or if it did, it wasn’t working) so we had a large mobile unit in the room. For this to work, the duct needed to hang out the open window so there was a trade off between the quiet of having the window closed and the hot temperature of the room without the air con unit being used
- the shower head did not stay in position while having a shower when we arrived. We mentioned it to reception and it was fixed promptly (thank you!). However, the shower tray did not drain after a shower so the second person having a shower had to stand in the first persons dirty water
- the pillows in the room on arrival were very flimsy. However, when we mentioned this to reception next day, they informed us that they had a pillow menu. We got to choose extra pillows for our second night and they were perfect (thank you).
Overall, if you must stay in the city centre, this is not a bad option on a budget. However, next time, I would choose to stay in one of the big name hotels near the airport for the same price and do the 12 minute commute into the city by train.
