Good place for a rest day on coast to coast walk
Pros:

Richmond is a great town. The Black Lion is very well located just off the market square. It's a nice pub with a good vibe and interesting history. Our room was on the top floor and the stairs got narrower as we went so it was really difficult to get a large suitcase up last stair. Staff were welcoming

Pros:

Very clean, very comfortable bedroom and the shower was a nice size and easy to use, and it was right on the shops and town centre, so we didn’t need to travel anywhere for shopping or drinking and eating.

Cons:

Sunday dinner was disappointing with burnt puddings and very fatty beef, but that was absolutely the only disappointment about the whole weekend.

Disappointing stay in a lovely pub. Could be so much better with a bit more care and attention.
Pros:

We really like the pub, and have visited many times in the past. It's comfortable, good beers and nice food. The younger staff are friendly and helpful. it's a pity then that staying here for the first time was disappointing. We're good travellers, and not easily bothered by details , but we were disappointed and a bit sorry we'd booked to stay, as we have good memories of the Black Lion as a pub. The location is good, near the market square but quiet. The room itself was comfortable.

Cons:

What a shame - could be so lovely but a bit neglectful service. From the beginning, communication was poor. I messaged several times to check on the booking before finally getting a reply. No-one answers the phone . When we arrived we went to the bar, to the senior staff who ignored us. When the bar staff asked us if we wanted something, we explained we were checking in. Only then the senior staff member showed interest. The room wasn't cleaned properly, hairs in the shower which we had to remove. We twice left the please service room notice on the door, the first time it was cleaned, the second time not at all. We had to go downstairs carrying bedsheets to find staff. The wifi didn't work at all in the room. Finally, the breakfast was not great .although we ordered it the first morning at 7.30am it was lukewarm and we had to send it back. Dry small piece of bacon, hard eggs. I can't say it was good value compared to what's available in town. Regretfully I'm not sure I'd recommend staying here.

The staff were very helpful & pleasant. The bedroom and bathroom were very clean and tidy.

Cons:

Nothing. It was an old building but everything was well presented. The only downside was the car park but there was a 24hr car park near.

Staff member very dismissive and rude upon arrival. Barely spoke or looked up from what she was doing and was unhelpful regarding parking arrangements. We arrived too early for check in and were told so rather abruptly. No offer to keep luggage until check in became available
